My sister-in-law has developmental disabilities and since the birth of my son, she has been missing a book she had when she was a child. It comes up nearly every time we come to visit (she’s in her late 20s). She has the book memorized, so I will write the lines below and hope it helps.

The book cover is red and in the top is cut out in the shape of the illustrated baby

(may not be exact words)
Look at what these babies do, are these the things that you do too?
One little baby touches his nose, another little baby wiggles his toes
One baby laughs; another one cries
This one plays peek-a-boo and hides his eyes
One baby crawls, this one stands,
and this little baby claps his hands
3 hungry babies; one messy face,
Now they go off to have a race! Look who wins! Ready, set GO!!
It’s time to get clean, rub-a-dub-dub
This little baby plays in the his tub
All these babies like to play,
But why is one little baby crawling away?
He needs to be changed,
He needs a big kiss,
and now he plays a game like this:
Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake baker’s man;
bake me a cake as fast as you can!
There’s one more thing these babies do…
They wave good-bye!
Can YOU wave too?

Hello! I’ve been trying to remember a book I used to love as a kid around 2006-2008? For a long time I thought it was an Edgar Allen Poe children’s book but I looked it up on google and couldn’t find exactly what I used to read. It had a lot of unique illustrations that were pretty creepy/scary. The illustrations were of small kids and I remember them having big, wide eyes. When I used to rent it it also came with an audio tape to listen along to. I don’t remember much so I know my details aren’t very helpful but if you know of any older strange/scary children’s books please let me know! Thank you for this cool resource!

Looking for a children’s book that my brother used to read to me when I was little (mid-1980s). He passed away this year and I’d love to find this book. I remember it started with:

A is for apple, shiny and red
B is for balloon, flying high overhead

For the second one, it might be worth taking a look at How Joe the Bear and Same the Mouse Got Together by Beatrice Schenk De Regniers. The older versions are illustrated by Brinton Turkle, and newer printings are illustrated by Bernice Myers.

Joe the Bear and Sam the Mouse are two friends who have very little in common – but they discover that they both share a love for ice cream.

Can anyone help find this..?? There was this book from when I was a kid called “You Can Fly If You Wear The Cutie Booties” and it’s NOWHERE to be found when I search it. I was born in 1986, but the illustration style reminds me of the late-60s. It was a very short, simple book that had a yellow background and hard cover. The “cutie booties” referenced here were drawn to look like bowling shoes with little wings. I remember holding it in my tiny hands!!

I really can’t remember much about these two books I adored as a young child in the 1980s. One of them, the page that sticks in my mind is of swirling colors going down a drain. I think it was a bathtub drain and I think the person taking a bath had been doing some painting. It was a beautiful, vividly colorful image.
The other one, all I can remember is that two friends are walking home together and they are two different kinds of animals, but they were wearing clothes and walking like people. I think they were sharing some kind of food, like gum or candy. Unlikely either one will ever come back to me, but I am just trying here because I haven’t been able to stop trying to recall them for many years.

I’m trying to remember the name of a childhood book about a young girl who is in bed at night. She then gets out of bed and rides on the back of a black jaguar or panther.

I think she may have been in the hospital and I think she may have been African American. The book had words but it had pictures too. I think she may have had pigtails in the picture of her riding on the black jaguar/panther.

It was one of my sister’s absolute favorites from the 90s and I’m trying to get it for her for her baby shower! Please help!

Hello! Ok. Im trying to find a book from my childhood, mid 1970s or so. It was an oversized book, maybe 14x14in or so? I dont think there was any written dialog, I believe it was all illustrations. Pen and ink style with some color here and there. Very detailed drawings on most pages that told the story and set the scenes. I believe it was sort of a medieval theme book. Knights and maybe 2 “tribes” or competing groups of knights. The characters had different helmets, some horned, some armor, I believe all of them were wearing helmets. There was a flower that erupted from the ground. The ended up building a huge cage/dome around the flower and perhaps the two groups were fighting over the flower and eventually it blooms. It was very detailed, but there was a lot of whitespace. The kind of cool detailed illustrations that sort of reminds me of how Wheres Waldo was drawn with all kinds of small characters doing something funny so you could sit and really take your time to find fun things. I believe the name of the book was the name of the flower? Like “The Quormiand” or something like that. It is driving me nuts. Any ideas?

Please could anyone help find this book- Please would you help me find this childhood book for my lovely dad? It was his favourite book sixty years ago, but he can’t remember title or author. Please share far and wide, particularly with people of his age. He’s been looking for this for decades and it would make his Christmas.

The beginning of the story goes like this:

A brother and sister were sat on the carpet in their lounge looking into the flames of the fire and imagining what pictures they could see in the flames. Their parents poked their heads around the door and said ‘we are off now, look after yourselves and be good’. The brother and sister said goodbye and then continued looking into the flames of the fire.
As time wore on the room became darker and the fire cast more shadows onto the walls. These looked like woods in a forest. Then they realised they were woods in a forest and out of the woods came two horses.
The children went with the horses down to the nearby beach. The horses said that they could fly over the water, but could not carry the children as well, but there was a small boat in the beach so the children could ride in the boat and the horses would tow them with the ropes that were attached to the boat. The boy went and got a bag of sweets from a local shop and then, when they were settled in the boat the horses took off and towed the children across the sea.
This was the start of their adventures.

I’m looking for a children’s book I remember as a kid. The only thing I have to go off of is that the cover had a hill/mountain shaped like a dwarf/old man. It looked like you think it would with a bald head (i believe), beard and was mostly covered on foliage. And in the book it had the same drawing but a cross section of the mountain to show it was a fortress for the inhabitants. It was in my elementary school library in the mid 80’s and was at least 12″×12″. I have gone through the david the gnome book and am sure its not one of those. This is the only book from my childhood that I have yet to find. Thank you for any help.

That sounds like A Taste of the Moon by Michael Grejniec.

This whimsical children’s story highlights cooperation and collaboration between a group of animals in their quest to reach the moon.

“For a long time the animals had wanted to find out what the moon tasted like. Was it salty or sweet? They only wanted to taste a little piece…but however hard they tried, not even the biggest animal could reach it.

One day, the little tortoise decided to climb up the highest mountain so she could touch the moon. From up there, the moon was closer; but the tortoise couldn’t reach it. And so she called the elephant…”

I am looking for a book that was read to me as a child in the late 90’s, maybe early 2000’s. It was about a school where weird, paranormal things happen. One chapter dealt with a girl who was turned into a walking, talking breakfast burrito. The cover of the book had a cartoon picture of this burrito girl walking. Her name was like Betty burrito, Becky burrito… I believe something like that…

The Little Horse Bus would be a good guess. Unfortunately, from what I saw of the story and illustrations it is not the one of my memory. I have the impression that the story I read as a child had an American setting and the plot was about the loss of the old ways as technology (the automobile) renders them quaint and obsolete; similar to the sentiment of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel or the numerous books about steam trains saving the day proving that they are as valuable as the streamliners that are replacing them.

Thank you for your help.

I am trying to find the name of a book I remember from my childhood. As far as I can remember, it was about a bunch of dogs who are maybe at a groomer? They hear a fire truck and go chasing it down the road. As you go along, you need to put the paper dogs back into their homes and beds. At the back of the book is an envelope to put all the dogs in. I’m pretty sure it was a hardcover. I was born in the early 70’s, and it was old then, so it was printed in at least the 50’s at my best guess. It was color I think, but mostly just black, white and maybe red. Not a whole lot of variety of color, which would go with the age I think. Each of the dogs was a different breed also as I recall. Sorry it isn’t more to go on. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I’m looking for a Santa Claus book I read either late 80’s or early 90’s. A few plot points I remember.
He was being chased by a bad guy, who eventually got so cold he lost all of his hair.
One of the people traveling with him invented pontoon shoes that helped him walk across water.
The “elves” invented a translucent balloon filled with gas that gave his sleigh lift.
It was beautifully illustrated. It was such a integral part of my Chrostmas past and I am hoping to be able to find it for my sons first Christmas.

I teach English to students in China. A student shared a Chinese translation of a book about animals that are trying to reach the full moon. There is a turtle, an elephant, a giraffe, a zebra, a lion, etc. who stand on top of each other in a tower to reach the moon. Other animals join the tower, with a mouse on top. The mouse reaches the moon and eats it until it is a crescent moon. The story ends with a fish swimming to the crescent moon’s reflection to eat it. Does anyone know if this book is also available in an English translation, and if so, what is the title and author? Thank you very much!

I’m looking for a children’s book, I don’t remember the title at all, and all I CAN remember is; A boy gets a new pair of ice skates, and against his parents warnings that the pond is too thin to skate on, he goes anyway and ends up falling through, but a spirit (or an angel, I don’t remember) saves him and pulls him back up to the edge of the pond.

A long shot, but if it might have been a girl that fell through the ice, take a look at Frost Hollow Hall by Emma Carroll. (There are boys in the story – Will, the boy who loans Tilly a pair of skates, and Kit – the boy who died falling through the ice years ago – and who saves Tilly when she falls through.)

“Frost Hollow Hall by Emma Carroll is a chilling ghost story set in the winter of 1881. Tilly is too poor to afford ice skates, so when Will, the butcher’s son, offers to let her use a pair as part of a dare, she jumps at the chance. Little does she know, Will is taking her to the lake at the manor house. The same lake which no one has been allowed to skate on since Kit Barrington died in an ice skating accident 10 years earlier. When they arrive, Tilly is afraid they will be caught but Will reassures her everything will be fine. Except its not. Tilly falls through the ice and is rescued by the ghost of Kit Barrington. Kit haunts her dreams for days afterward and urges her to expose the truth of the circumstances surrounding his death.”

I am searching for the title of a book of which I can remember only one picture. The plot, as I recall, has something to do with the waning days of horse drawn cabs in the city (I think New York) as taxis become more popular. The only specific memory I have is of the horse gripping the belt of a young boy in its teeth, who had run out into traffic, to pull him back to save him from a car (truck?bus?) about to hit him. The moral of the story fits quite well with many of the Little Golden Books and Whitman Tell-a-Tale books from the 1940s and 1950s about the underdog doing something “heroic”. to prove its continued worth and value. I recall there is a sign in the picture that says “Hack Stand”. I read this book, and others, over and over back in 1965/66.

Pre 1970 I started reading a book from the Jr. high school library, It was about a boy who woke up alone and lost. He traveled a bit and found a girl also lost and they eventually found a baby. The kids were in a forest or jungle if I remember correctly. They were from different tribes I think and learned to communicate. Alas, summer vacation arrived and I never got to finish the read but still think of it 50 years later. May have had the word green or lost in the title. Any ideas?

My husband speaks fondly of a story about a frog, who didn’t want to hibernate but wanted to see the winter, which he read as a child. My husband is 83 years old if that assists with knowing of the time-frame the story may be within. I was hoping to surprise him with the book for Christmas but first need to find it. Really long shot here – but if there’s a chance he read it *to* a child, rather than *as* a child, there’s Tomie DePaola’s Four Stories for Four Seasons (1977) which includes a story about Mister Frog staying awake to celebrate Christmas with his friends, Missy Cat, Mistress Pig, and Master Dog.

“Mister Frog has slept through Christmas every year and is determined to celebrate this one with his three best friends. But when he takes a short nap that turns into a very long sleep, he wakes up late on Christmas Eve, and there’s no one to celebrate with! He’s all alone until Santa and all of Frog’s friends arrive with trees, food, and holiday cheer just in time for the big day!”

This is not going to be much to go on, but my friend is trying to remember a book that was set back when cars were a new phenomenon. It was about a boy who visited animals, including a raccoon and some crows, that had taken up residence in the attic of the house next door. The boy would climb a tree to get into the attic to visit the critters. The story was set in a small town with a railroad running through it. The name of the town may have been the title, perhaps ending in “Junction” or “Crossing.” It was one of two books in a series. We would sure appreciate it if anyone can name this book!

I am looking for a book I read in the early 1970s. The authors were a husband and wife. It was a collection of scary stories. One particular story was titled It. It was about a creature that was made out of some collection of gooey material but it could walk. It chased a little girl into a cave structure and it was able to squeeze itself between the rocks. The story was partly from the monsters viewpoint, what it was thinking and how it felt. At the end of the story the creature fell into a stream. It was describing what it was feeling laying in the cold water as it was being washed away. As an adult I don’t think it was anything a child should have been reading as it has haunted me well into my 50s

I am looking for the name of a children’s picture book I read in the 90s but could be older. It had colurful illustrations about made up creatures. One was a snake that bit it’s own tail and rolled like a tire until it got a flat. One was some kind of camel like creature that had a bald head and would cover it’s bald spot with the wig on it’s tail. I think another grew grass on it’s back.

I am looking for a big hardcover childrens short story/bedtime story/fable book from around the seventies to mid eighties. It was glossy and dark blue in colour and possibly had a picture of a large tree on the front.at night, and maybe the moon? The stories were possibly fables. They were all a bit dark.
The first story was about jack who ended up challenging a giant or ogre to an eating contest, he put a skein under his jacket and tipped all the food (and wine?) into the skein and then he said he was full and needed to make room and slit it open and continued to eat. The giant did the same and died.
There was also a story near the end of the book about a man who was rude to an old fisherwoman/hag who was mending nets and she pulled off her thimble and tossed it into the sand and cursed him to spend the rest of his life looking for it.

Hi, I’m looking for a book about an old teddy bear who’s left on the shelf, he is missing an eye and his arm is loose. One day someone gives him a new eye and sews up his arm and he is loved again. I would love to find this book. It was slim, hardback with a green spine and the bear on the front cover.

I’m looking for a Christmas picture book that was published (I’m guessing) in the 1980’s, but not later than 1994. It’s based on the Twelve Days of Christmas, but this book added up all of the gifts for each day, then added them up in one grand total at the very end. It was a humorous book, but I can’t remember its title or the author. Sorry I don’t have more info!

I am looking for a book that was a collection of stories, read to me by grandparents 1955-1958. One story was about dolls that came to life so all the children were frantically repairing them (I honestly think that’s when I decided to become a doctor!), one was about a town that desperately needed rain, but someone had an objection to every single day! Big glossy book

I’m looking for a childrens book that I read in the 80s, it was a softcover, short childrens novel. I remember it having a one word title it was called ‘Dog’. I am looking for the name of a book series about a little boy who has all these funny imagined events that happen in kindergarten. For instance, the school nurse lines up all the kids and vaccinates them all at once with one shot, the gym teacher makes them climb the rope with a fire burning the end, I thnk there is one that is about the bus ride, etc etc. Of course, when he finally goes to school he is relieved that none of the tales are true.

I’m looking for a book I had between 1958 and 1963 about a school aged girl who has a big extended family and each member had their own room and they all lived together in a big house. Essentially, the plot is the girl describing her family and what each member does, if I recall correctly. The book itself was a big, hard cover, rectangle book with each family member in each of their rooms as a cross section of the house on the cover, I think. Thank you. Juliana

Children’s book I read as a tot in the late 70s, about a dog who would visit a child in his dreams/sleep. I think the dog would fly around the world with the boy during the night. Vivid illustrations with beautiful color. Beyond that, I got nothing – I know it’s a long shot.

Hi. We had a book in the 70s that had a variety of tales & pictures with beautiful artwork. It was somewhat dark & very eccentric. There was a page of flying birds that were also scissors. There was the story that read “it was a dark and stormy night. The ship was sinking. The captain said to me…” There was a lady walking I think that said “followed by a magpie, followed by a shoe fly…” Pete & Repeat were sitting on a fence. It was about 8″ x 10″. That’s all I can remember. Thanks for your help!

Hello. I am looking for a children’s book that I read in 6th grade. It involved creatures that were either elves, gnomes, or actually referred to as something indicating they were small..i.e. mini’s? The characters all had very hard to pronounce names and the inner cover contained a map of village(s) of these creatures. It was a delightful book that I’d like to read again or read to my children, but for the life of me I can’t remember what it was or where to start. Please help. I will continue my fervent search, but hope you can help. Thank you.

I am looking for a book that I read in 8th grade last year. It is about a person who followed her sister who had been trafficked into a place full of crime. The person who followed her was her sister, but when she got to the place she had to act like a boy so that people wouldn’t take her into trafficking. The story has at least 3 narratives, each chapter a different person’s POV. There are 3 characters, 2 girls and a boy. The boy and the girl who was trafficked end up having a love interest, and one of the girl’s name is Mei. Please help me find it?

Hi. I’m thinking of two books from my childhood, probably around 1991-93. I was in 4-5th grade when reading. One revealed in the end that there was an enormous crocodile that would hide in a discreet location and no one could figure out why or what was happening during story. It would come out wreak havoc and then go back into hiding.

The other was same time period and involved a villainous character that lived in the woods and would hunt people. I feel like the title was one word and started with a “w.” Something about weasel, like that was his name or something. I saw the book “Hatchet” from 90’s and that triggered other two books for me. Sorry for terrible descriptions. Lol.

Hi. I’m looking for an illustrated children’s book that was described to me as a young boy who lived on the East Coast and took a balloon to visit his aunt in another State for lunch, then he went to visit his uncle in another state and due to time zone he reached his uncle’s in time for lunch also, he finally ended up at his grandparents but was not hungry for lunch but possibly stayed for dinner. i have looked for this book off and on for years with no luck. It never had a cover for me to remember probably because it was my older brother’s book and by the time it got to me it was ragged. It was a collection of stories for children that often had a moral and each one was dated for a day of the year I can remember one being about Johnny missing the train that his grandmother was coming on because he fell asleep when he didn’t mind his mother and take a nap that day. It was probably published in the 1940’s or 50’s. thanks.

Hi. I am trying to find a particular book which I had as a child, so this must have been c. 1987-1990. My father used to travel to the US quite a lot back then, and would bring us back a lot of paperback illustated children’s books, for age group around 6-10 years, so it could be a book he brought back from over there.

This one was beautifully illustrated and although I can remember very little of the story, it has stuck with me, particualrly the pictures – lots of cherry blossom trees and fields and mountains. The plot seemed to be about an Asian boy who was on some sort of quest – he had to get through some mountains and there was what I think might have been a Genie or a Jinn trying to hinder him. In one particular image the genie was giant sized and had green poison dripping from a long pointed fingernail.

I realise this isn’t much to go on, but I would love to track this down again, if anyone has any ideas.

I’m looking for a book I used to love to check out from the library. It’s a book full of nursery rhymes and poetry involving snow and winter, but also Valentine’s day. The art was all hand drawn, and had a limited color palette, very black white red and maybe light blue. All of the pictures were horse and carriage times, and I know that the cover was light purple, lavender, around the outside border with an illustration from the inside in the middle. I feel like the title was something similar to “letters for my valentine” but I can’t find it anywhere, and the library doesn’t have it anymore. My mom used to read it to me a lot, even when it wasn’t winter time, and I’d love to get it for her for Christmas.

They might end up going through a cave with gemstones encrusted into the cave walls. The book was hardcover, about A4 size, and either dark greens or blues. The illustrations on the cover and throughout the book are vibrant.

My concern is that I’m a little mistaken -that it’s part of a collection of stories. It’s not hilda Boswell, but definitely the illustrations are of her caliber.

I’m sure the person who administers that site would welcome a question. Good luck, Suzanne
