Early 80’s or earlier. I think there was a spider? So maybe the characters were insects? A picture book. The protagonist gives a gift of beautiful icicles for Christmas (or a birthday?), wrapped up as a present in a box, but they melt! The recipient and friends laugh at the giver. The giver is distraught because it simply didn’t know that icicles could melt! So moving…
Please help me find this personality-forming title from my youth. Thank you!
In about 1955, as a kindergartner, I read a favorite picture book in which one of the characters frequently said, “always present, always punctual.”
Or maybe it was “always punctual, always present”.
Anybody remember a book with those lines repeated in the text?
Through the Window, a Disney book, might fit.
Looking for a book I had as a child.
The cover ha s about with blond or orange hair and I believe a bunch of animals walking behind him. In the book he wears a (left?) shoe that is two sizes too big and steps out of it, him stepping out of the shoe causes all sorts of problems and he starts going to the animals asking why they frightened this animal and caused events to happen. A very large bird lays an egg on his head, and it all turns out to be from a. Rabbit hopping in to his lost shoe.
Details don’t match exactly, but it’s a lot like A Fly Went By.
Hi there, I’m looking for a book about a boat that gets turned into jelly(jello) after catching fire, this was a short children’s story and my sister and I both remember it being read to us around the late 2000s or early 2010s.
This book was British and the boat set off from Bristol, I cant remember the name or author but I’m 100% sure this book exists.
Hi friends – I am looking for a picture book about a tree witnessing a portion of history.
I remember the book being from mostly one fixed perspective where the tree was in the same place but things around it changed.
I had a picture book when I was a kid that I have never been able to track down as an adult. It must have been purchased at a ‘Friend’s of Library’ sale because it had the plastic covering that library books usually have on them. I was born in 1991 so this would’ve been purchased near the end of the 90s or early 00s. Based on the way the book looked I do not think it was written any earlier than 1980ish.
Things I remember for sure: The plot of the book surrounds a large tree throughout its lifetime and everything that the tree gets to witness. The tree witness changes throughout history, I remember buildings changing and time passed with each page and the tree growing along with it. I know there was a page that featured some sort of election or celebration where kids are sitting in the lower branches of the trees watching someone give a speech. At the end of the book the tree begins to die and they end up planting a new one next to the old one.
Things I could be getting mixed up: For a while I thought this book took place in the United States, though it could be in the UK. I vaguely remember seeing the industrial revolution taking place in the background but cannot remember for sure.
I’ve looked for this book for close to 20 years now, I thought I had it last summer but when it came in the mail it was a book about a different tree.
This is not the right book, but here’s another Tree views history book we love, still in paperback, Tree in the Trail by Holling C. Holling. There’s also this book, which I am not familiar with but it might have had buildings. Title: The Tree That Would Not Die ** Author: Ellen Levine Publisher: Scholastic Inc., 1995 Description: The story of a five hundred year old Treaty Oak in Austin, Texas, is told from the tree’s point of view, covers the nation’s history that took place during the tree’s lifetime, and describes the malicious 1989 poisoning that nearly destroyed it.
I’m posting this query for Mrs. Colley. She remembers so many details of this well loved book… I hope we can find it.
Hi I wanted to ask if you could help me please, I would have been around 7 years old when I had this book in the 1970s. The only problem is that I can’t remember the name of the book or the author.
It is an English book, a hardback, On the front the image is a yellow border with a 1930s house and a man rolling the front lawn. Each page shows pictures of each room in the house. The furniture in the house looks approx 1940s/1950s there is a young boy and girl in the house and mum is vacuuming the green living room carpet. With each picture there are a few words talking about what is happening in each room.
I have been looking for this book for around five years and have gone on all the book search engines with no luck I phoned the main library that owns every book published I can’t remember the name they could not help without an author or book title . This book is very sentimental to me, are you able to help please?
Thank you for taking the time to respond to me, Kind Regards Mrs Colley
Hello.
I’m trying to remember a book or two from when I was in elementary school back in 1988-89. The book itself might have been written in the ’80s or even earlier. I think it came from the school’s media center. It was about a cat. I think it was striped. In one book, the cat saves another adult cat and a small group of kittens. One kitten was stuck in a tree. In another adventure, (I’m not sure if it’s the same book), the same cat is trapped alone in a dark place. It might have been in a sewer or basement.
Thank you.
I am looking for a book that my kids had when they were young.
If you look on the back you should be able to see an ISBN number, and/or maybe a publisher. Then you can find the book on amazon or abebooks.com. Let us know if that doesn’t work.
I wish I could. My son threw it away before my daughter could get a picture of the back of the book. Our basement flooded and it was moldy I guess
The artwork looks somewhat like https://www.leboncoin.fr/ad/livres/2883548694 My First Words and Pictures by Brita Granstrom published with several covers and easy to find in the US. 9781406323177 I just sent this because of the interior pictures. Oddly enough there are very few books with this exact title. It looks like an Usborne book to me and there is one with similar illustrations by Jenny Tyler called “First Words” 9780746022566 I saw one on abe, didn’t look on Amazon https://www.abebooks.com/First-Words-Jenny-Tyler-Usborne-Publishing/31844275913/bd
I’m sorry I can’t find your book. Maybe someone else can.
I appreciate you looking! I have looked everywhere and haven’t found anything similar either. I will look at the books you sent and maybe those will work
Thank you so much for your help
You’re welcome. It really does look like an Usborne publication but I can’t find it! Good luck,
Were these late ’80s early ’90s? Cause it seems like I recall that white cover with red pinstripe going around it. Seems like there was a whole series with that pattern that my sons read, but I don’t remember who made them. I googled and did image searches and can’t turn up anything similar. Maybe try Goodreads or Reddit. They have forums for book solving, and some of those folks can work wonders.

I am looking for a children's book probably published in the mid 1980s. I only remember 1 line from the book: "Fran saw Stan stacking cans on Jan's veranda." The names Fran and Stan could be switched. I would like to know the name of the book, the author and if it is still available,
Looking for a children's picture book that I had in the mid-1980s, so probably published sometime in 1970s-early 80s. I don't remember much but I believe it's about a mouse family (possibly another type of animal) and the father is so exhausted from something (maybe working multiple jobs?) that he falls asleep in his dinner (may specifically mention mashed potatoes). I am fairly certain it was full color, detailed art, and illustrations may indicate that the family lives underground, maybe something that shows a tunnel to their house.
I am looking for a book from 80s. Like a halloween kids book that has a kid on front jumping over a fence. There is a line in it about jumping over the fence and ripped my pants. Cant find anything.
Hello, i remember reading a book as a class early to mid 90s about a kids football team who liked the schools breadsticks with blue cheese dressing. That is all i remember. It may have been a scholastic book.
I've been looking for a childhood book. I remember it was a soft cover that was orange. I believe it had a picture of a beehive drawn in black on the front with a bee. All I remember of it was the line "There was a mouse in a house with a louse". I remembered it showed a little bug on top of the mouses head.
Am trying desperately to find a book for my friend that she swears exists and nobody can find. We’ve both searched extensively and had no luck. Basically it is a children’s picture book from the earlier 2000’s; it’s a “find and search” of all kinds of animals (she specifically remembers baboons), where it asks you to find various animals and then the dog; with each page apparently the dog starts to fade, age, and look progressively sadder; by the end it is either gone or barely visible. We can’t find it anywhere and I’ve just found this page. Can anybody help us out?

Could this be from one of the Encyclopedia Brown books? It sounds familiar to me too, but I can't be sure. I Googled it, but I'm sure you've tried that too. Nothing came up for me that looks right. I hope you find it
It’s similar to this but the boy was just a baby/toddler in my story.
Been looking for an illustrated children's book about a cat. Most likely British. Art style was contemporary. I think the cat was just going out and about on its own. I think it found some spaghetti at some point? It could've thought the spaghetti was a mouse's tail? I've got an image in my head of the cat walking through a railway station, but I could've also just made that up.
Would love to hear any suggestions of what it could be. Long shots are also welcome.
Not sure at all, but kind of sounds like something by Edward Gorey.
In the night kitchen – Maurice sendak ?
Long shot as I couldn't find this anywhere else! I recall reading a picture book as a child that involved a prince (who didn't know he was one) who tours the kingdom which includes riding on a crane or gantry over a vast factory-like bakery… I think the workers in the kingdom were protecting him until he was old enough to reclaim the kingdom from the ruler who wasn't a good ruler. Some sort of rebellion takes place but I don't remember more details than that! It would have been published in the early or mid 1990s. The illustrations were beautiful, and a bit dark & melancholy.
Looking for a book from the early 90s that was a collection of short mysteries/who-done-its. One story was about a theft of a ring at the beach and the thief was caught because she said she’d had the ring on for years but when asked to take it off, she had to tan line under it. This has been bothering me for years and I was a children’s librarian! Thank you!!
Post on here every few months in the hopes someone will solve the case for me: Book I had in the mid 80s. Black and white illustrations. Macabre single-page stories of children up to no good / spooky tales. One has a kid who kills a vampire with a stake through the heart. Another has a kid who sets a christmas tree on fire. Another has a boy running through a swamp cahsing butterflies and getting mud everywhere. Another has a kid trying to cross a garden path but it's filled with spooky stuff like spiders, snakes, nasty stuff. I'm certain 'ghastly' was in the title. Think it was published/sold through Scholastic (in Australia anyway).
Bookfinder allows you to search by keyword. Try ‘ghastly’. I’ve just checked, it would take a few hours to sift through, but most can be immediately eliminated by title alone. Good luck, happy sifting!
2nd comment: you can further sort by publisher, so try Scholastic as an additional filter. Several things come up. And try ‘ghostly’ too, just in case you’re misremembering. Hope that helps!
Looking for a Children's picture book checked out from library in the early 90's (most likely published then but possibly in 80's) about a woman who was ugly/plain and wanted to be beautiful so the prince would marry her. A little old man with a raisin looking face peddled her a potion but told her only to take it sparingly and it would make her pretty. She did and then got vain and took it all, and became beautiful but ugly on the inside. She was mean to the raisin face man and I think he turned out to be the prince under a curse and she didn't end up with him after all. Was a colorful picture book.
Joanne Ryder, Chipmunk Song.
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2 ``Imagine you are someone small sleeping on a bed of leaves in a cool, dark room underground.'' Taking this opening suggestion literally, just as young listeners might do, Cherry has turned Ryder's simple text about a chipmunk's late summer activities into an extraordinarily attractive picture book. The child that Ryder is addressing is shown on each double-page spread experiencing the same activities as the chipmunk. The miniature child and the animal itself climb into the sunlight, gather berries and nuts, hide from a hawk, prepare their snug burrows, and finally curl up for the long winter sleep. There is no interaction between child and chipmunk, subtly maintaining the distinction between what is real and what is imagined. The fine watercolor and ink illustrations, in cutaways below ground and at chipmunk eye-level above, are full of intriguing, accurate detail in a fresh perspective. Science, art, and imagination are rarely so well served. Janet D. French, Centennial School District Libs . , Warminster, Pa.

A possibility: Don't Take Teddy, by Babbis Friis-Baastad.
There was a picture book I read in the early 90s about either chipmunks specifically or woodland creatures. It's told with this shunk boy who is acting like a chipmunk and I have a vivid memory of a page showing him crawling into the underground nest of the chipmunk. It's been bugging me for days
Might well be December Secrets, by Patricia Reilly Giff (part of the Polk Street School series).
Agree, including the pasta craft.
I'm looking for an old favorite, don't know when it was published or what the title was as I was quite young but it was possibly gifted to me around 2010-2011ish. It was a light pink hardcover picture book (or at least had lot's of illustrations) sort of sparkly and illustrated with a few princesses in a line on the cover, if I remember correctly. I think it was a fairytale collection or treasury with The Twelve Dancing Princesses (< this I'm pretty sure of) and maybe Snow White? It was really pretty but sadly that's all I recall and my mom doesn't remember which book it was! Would really appreciate any help
Looking for a children's book from the early 90s, I read it in the 3rd grade. It was one of the short chapter books with some illustrations.
All I remember is: it was set at Christmas time; an elementary class was participating in a secret santa and the main character chose the name of a girl in the class that she did not get along with; and there was one day they were decorating shoe boxes with pasta pieces.
I’m looking for a chapter book from the 80’s or 90’s about two cousins who try to save thier baby cousin with Down syndrome from being put into a special needs home by thier aunt and uncle. They take him to a cottage or cabin and spend I few days there. I can’t remember any other details. I think the book was called “Saving Mikey”
I’m looking for a book from the 80’s or 90’s about two kids who had a cousin with down syndrome whose parents wanted to put him in a home for special needs. They take him and run away to a cottage/cabin. I can’t exactly remember the title but I believe it was “Saving cousin mickey”
80s or 90s kids book
This is a long shot but I remember this book that was possibly a collection of different stories all involving animals as the characters. One in particular was a group of 2 or 3 raccoons (maybe bears, maybe skunks, maybe squirrels, idr exactly but I'm leaning towards raccoons) I think there were 2 brothers and 1 sister. They decide to go into town to get a purse for their mother's birthday but it's a surprise so they don't tell her where they're going. The trip takes longer than expected and they spend all their money on the bag and maybe snacks and no longer have money for a bus ride back or to make a phone call so they start walking and then it begins to rain so they hide under a tree. Eventually someone they knew drives by (might've been the mom) and they get home soaking wet and give her the gift.
I remember reading this as a kid in the early 90s but I don't know exactly when it was written. The pictures were color because I remember the purse being green. I don't recall any other stories that were in the book which is why idk if it was a story book or if this was its own thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated
A Stranger In the Spanish Village, by Anita Feagles.
A Stranger In the Spanish Village, by Anita Feagles.
Can someone help me find a book I read in grade school in the 70's? It was a book with photographs and the story under the pictures. It was about a black girl who learns she is a witch and she learns to use her powers.
Sounds like “Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth”, by E.L. Konigsburg. Not photographs, but illustrations. Hope that helps.
Looking for a childrens book my daddy used to read to me back in the late 60s. It was about two little boys in Spain (I think) who followed around a man they found suspicious. They thought he was a mantequero (monster). He always carried around a box or satchel or something. It turned out the man was an artist, and it was his art things in the bag or satchel.
Want to track down a picture book of macabre tales for kids. Black and white illustrations. I think it had 'ghastly children' in the title. One story has a boy who is visited by a vampire at night and the boy kills him. Another is of an odd boy catching butterflies in a mudd swamp with a net. Another story of a naughty girl who sets a christmas tree on fire. Another one has a girl who needs to get to the front door of a house but the garden is filled with creepy crawlies. I got the book through Scholastic at school in Australia in the mid 80s.
I read a children's book (1950's) about a medieval tailor who has a canary. His neighbor finds the bird's singing so annoying, he takes the canary to get rid of it, but is eventually enchanted by it. I remember that the tailor was very thin and wore green. The neighbor was heavy-set. The illustrations (if I am remembering them correctly) remind me of William Steig's illustrations. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi I'm looking for book! It is targeted for kids but not for babies, it's about like creatures, mostly mythical, and I think they were tales I also remember there being a cyclop, three-headed lady, some weird looking semi-human kids, and possibly a witch. It might have been a feel book, and I know it was most likely made before 2015 and it had this unique looking art style the book was hardcover, and they were short stories each. Or I think each of them had their own page of a semi-introduction, I've been searching like crazy
Hello all,
I'm looking for a book I read when I was in middle school; it was an older story (the vibe is comparable to The Wizard of Oz but less fantastical, or a Dickenson book) about a little orphan girl that joins some sort of travelling circus/band because she sings well and would otherwise be homeless. It ends with her getting adopted, not sure if by her relatives or just some random kind family. In the beginning of the book she has these dolls from her grandparents/parents (?) and the most beautiful one has black hair (unsure) and wears a silvery dress (very sure). She's very attached to these; they get stolen from her or she sells them to get money to buy necessities at some point early on, but she is reunited with at least the silver dress doll at the very end. I think the family that adopts her had it the whole time and it's an implication that she was fated to join them.
Sorry this is so vague, any help is appreciated ^^
Hello, Hoping someone might recognize this story. Thank you!
I’m looking for a children’s illustrated book circa 1964. The story involves a musical contest near a castle or palace. The winning music will revivify the palace. Individual musicians perform in front of it without success. But when they play together as an orchestra the palace springs to life.
This makes me think of 'Only the Cat Saw' by Ashley Wolff. (Note that there have been at least two editions with slightly different artwork.)
Hi there,
I'm looking for a children's book from probably the late 80's/early 90's (at least thats when I was little, but not sure how old the book actually was).
It was about a little girl called Emma (also my name). She had brunette hair, and I think wore a stripy black/blue & white shirt (at least in the pirate section). She turned her bedroom into adventures, like having a picnic on a blanket on the floor with her toys, and turning her bed into a pirate ship and sailing the seas. It wasn't a very long book and had simple sentences for each section. I think each page turn was her doing a different imaginary adventure in her bedroom with her toys.
I'm not sure if this website is US or UK based, but this would have been in the UK.
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!
Hi there!
I'm looking for a book that centred on a young girl whose house transformed into a jungle at night. I believe she was having a bad dream and trying to reach her parent's room but the green carpet and walls started turning into a jungle scene. Two tigers were also present – and I remember it being quite scary as a young child. She woke up at the end, and the tigers were just her domestic cats.
Can anyone please help me!?
I believe it had text and it was illustrated not cartoon. I remember a part of it involving there being a lot of rubbish in the sewer and the mouse having to navigate that. I may be going crazy but I'm sure it's a book!
If it was two mice and the rats taunt them, it could be Rainy Day Rescue by Barbara Davoll.
Probably a better guess: Monster Snuggles: Gurgle Gurgle! Frances Coe
Board book (Sterling/Pinwheel, June 30, 2001)
Ooh, ooh–it's a big green monster, a hungry one too, and it likes to chomp and it likes to chew! But, are you scared? Not at all. Because this fellow likes things that go squirt, that are squishy and splashy, crunchy and munchy…like orange-and-peanut butter-and-pickle sandwiches. It's the silliest food ever.
Alexander and the Magic Mouse.
Was it a wordless picture book?
I don't think so, I believe it had text. It was illustrated and not cartoons.
I'm looking for a book from my childhood but I can only remember sparse details: a little mouse somehow ends up in a sewer and encounters evil rats with red eyes along the way. It's very little context I know, but I'm hoping someone can help.
I’m looking for a book that I had as a kid in the 60s or early 70s about a yak and a great flood.
Try this one: Little Critter, A Yummy Lunch.
This is a site for people trying to find older books, but I post this site once, because it really is very well done.
Yes, thank you so much!
I highly recommend visiting doppol.com if you're looking for great books for children aged 7 to 13. They have a fantastic selection of handpicked books across various genres, perfect for young readers of all interests and levels. This site comes with a detailed description of each book. It's a wonderful resource to help your kids discover their next favorite book and develop a love for reading.
I’m looking for a book from (most likely) the 90s that had gorgeous realism illustrations that focused on a family and their life on their land and in their home. It may have been a farm. I think the mom had a baby and there is a page where she is in bed looking at her new born. There may have been an older son and grandpa who were proud of the new baby. The illustrations were like photographs, the oil paintings looked warm and real.
I’m looking for the title of a book that was read to me as a child to read to my baby. It had a fuzzy green cover with teeth and was about a dragon making snacks including orange slices that he squirted juice into his eyes and a peanut butter and pickle sandwich.
I hope this is allowed here. I am looking for books/ stories that feature a mallen streak?! I know, in that book, "when wennie was here" or whatever it's called, the kids walk through a haunted tunnel and get a mallen streak. im looking for more content like this!? thank you!? or where can i look towards to research this, I feel like this is a trope and not just from this one book?!
Hello Folks, my Dad (94) had a Blue English Reader back in the 1930s which contained a collection of illustrated classic stories and poetry such as, 'The dragon that wanted to be different, & Narcissus, poems included, 'Cherry ripe' and 'The Spider and the Fly'. Does anybody on this forum recognise any of this? I remember the Spider and the Fly were illustrated as two regency gentleman and I recall the final drawing of the poor fly wrapped up in webbing being quite shocking for a wee lad. Many thanks ! K
Hi there, I’m looking for a book my siblings and I had, the book in question was about a fish and chip shop. The only real part I remember from the book was the following rhyme. ‘We’ve got to open the shop, the chips to chop, the pies to heat and the batter to beat.’ I apologise and I’m aware that it’s next to no information to go on but by chance if anyone knows what book that is from please let me know. Many thanks, Pete
Miss Penny and Mr. Grubbs, by Lisa Campbell Ernst.
Hi All, I have been looking for a book I read to my kids about 15 years ago about a picnic, and I think the characters are animals, and more animals get added as the story goes on, bringing different items. What I can remember is some bring a pumpkin pie, and the animals say, “we love pumpkin pie” and another brings gum, and the animals ask if they have watermelon gum. Any help is appreciated, and have tried on my own with keyword searches to no avail. Thanks!
Did the book mention his toothy grin, or was that from an illustration?
Hello – I'm looking for a book read in the 1990s. It featured an older woman with a prize winning garden (peppers, if I remember correctly) and a jealous neighbor. The neighbor wanted to sabotage the garden so that his peppers could win so he released rabbits. Even though the older woman's plants were eaten by the rabbits, she entered the rabbits in the fair and won
I’ve been looking for a book about an old man who tells a boy a story about when he was younger. I don’t remember the plot unfortunately. He calls the boy “whippersnapper” or something like that. It is a funny story of something that happened when he was a boy — and it reminds me of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs… maybe something happened with the weather? Anyway, the old man has a toothy grin. It’s been driving me bonkers! I read the book in the early 2000’s to my little brothers. Thanks for any help!
Hey, I’m looking for a book from my childhood (1990-1999). The main character is a young girl who has a teddy bear called Chichi and ends up in a (possibly fairytale land) and meets a character called Trouble and he reassures her that everyone gets into trouble and it’s okay. There’s also a fairy that lives in a tree. Trouble is dressed in a really flamboyant way and is a bit scary.
I can’t remember the title or the cover, really hoping someone can help me find it.
Hi! I’m looking for a pair of children’s books from the 1970s or 1980s. One of the characters was a turtle, I think. He with dreamed about or sleepwalked and made wings from leaves. He ate zinnias. One of the books had a garden party. My sister and I are both stumped! Thank you in advance for help!
Great!
Thank you so very much for this reply! I’m excited to see if this is the book. I appreciate your help!
Open the Door and See All the People, alternate title The Toy House Dolls, by Clyde Robert Bulla.
Open the Door and See All the People, alternate title The Toy House Dolls, by Clyde Robert Bulla.
I’m looking for a children’s chapter book that I read in the 1980s. It may have been published earlier than the 1980s. The main character was a girl who visited a doll library from which dolls could be borrowed. The girl may have recently moved to the area where the doll library was located. I don’t remember any other plot details. I don’t think there was anything magical in this book. Out of the countless books that I spent my childhood reading, this book comes to mind from time to time and I’d love to find it. Thanks so much if anyone has any ideas.
Solved on another board: Traveling to Tondo.
Thank you so so much! Found a copy online for my daughter!
I’ve been looking for a British picture book I will have read as a child in the 90’s. It was about a little girl who goes to the fairground with her mother, it’s a cold autumn/winter night and she’s wearing mittens, I remember dogems, she gets a toffee apple and wins a goldfish in a bag. They leave (possibly on the bus) and when they return the next day, everything has gone with just an empty field/park and only litter and debris remains. The illustrations are more realistic rather than childlike/cartoonish. Any help would be greatly appreciated, it’s been a head scratcher for years!
Searching for a children's picture book from either the 80s or 90s(thinking it's more 90s). It's about a mongoose(I think? Not Rikki Tikki Tavi!) on his way to his wedding. He meets friends on the journey & each one prolongs the trip. For instance the tortoise cannot climb over a log, so they wait till the log rots. By the time he gets to his bride, she has already married someone else & had kids, because he took so long to get to her. I want to say the title is along the lines of "On The Road To…", "The Road To…", "Journey to…" & the place they are going to is close to sounding like Mandalay, I think… :{ Thank you in advance!
Hi everyone, I'm looking for a children's/YA series set in Philadelphia with a group of friends (coed). I think they solved mysteries and the clues or possibly titles were based on the streets in Philadelphia's downtown, like Locust and Chestnut. These were already published in the 1980s, but I'm not sure when the original publication date was. Thanks in advance for any leads!
Maybe, though it might be too late: The Story of Charlotte the Caterpillar.
Ah, not that one. But the art in it is lovely!
Another one to try: The Dream Tree, by Stephen Cosgrove.
Oh, MamaSquirrel! That's it! You are amazing!
Also, points for me, in that the core line was "Someday you'll know", so I was in the ballpark. But I would not have found this otherwise.
Thank you, kindly, and wishing you a wonderful rest of the week, and hoping you and yours are healthy and well.
Oh, that's great! Enjoy reconnecting with your book.
Miranda's Umbrella, by Val Biro.
You are INCREDIBLE. Thank you so much!
You're welcome! Thanks for posting back.
I'm looking for a children's book, that's American, its based around the months of the year. going to school in September (I think), thanksgiving in November, Halloween in October, showers in may. the art style is hand drawn art, the people don't have mouths and they all dress in olden day style outfits with bonnets and aprons. it could be a golden spine book and at the start it has a circle of the year poem. i can't remember it or the illustrator for the life of me. thank you.
Hi, memories from a 1994+ childhood here, so please forgive the hazy details.
Hoping desperately to track down a children's picture book in which a girl wakes up on her birthday. It's raining, she goes outside and finds some huge spectacles in the grass outside (do recall the word spectacles specifically, not glasses), which end up belonging to a quite irate giant she meets and must outwit, I believe after flying up via umbrella (or magic gumboots, though I'm quite sure it was umbrella) to stumble upon him.
She returns home in a very matter of fact 'just another ordinary day' esque way.
Bookseller here, and none of my attempts have made any progress- if I didn't remember the giant and spectacles so well would be sure I'd made it up.
Thank you in advance for your efforts!
Hello, all. I hope everyone is well!
I am looking for a children's book (1970s likely, though could be a bit earlier). It is about a caterpillar who will eventually become a butterfly. The caterpillar wants to know what it is like to be a butterfly?, and asks a butterfly, who tells it something like, "you'll know someday." Eventually the caterpillar weaves a cocoon and becomes a butterfly, and gives the same reply to a young caterpillar. The art, as I remember it, has a softness to it. I think the butterfly might be classic orange and black. The basic message is some things you need to discover on your own.
Malke's Secret Recipe: A Chanukah Story, by David A. Adler (Author), Joan Halpern (Illustrator)
I am looking for a Jewish folktale in picture book format. The story goes that there is a woman who makes the best latkes or potato pancakes. The father of the family sees the woman begin to prepare them and so he watches her make them through the window. He goes home and recites the recipe to his wife but she makes them the way "everyone knows" but they turn out just like the ones she always makes. I remember that the first woman used flour but when the husband says so his wife says "everyone knows that you make potato pancakes with bread crumbs". Any help remembering the title or author would be appreciated. Thank you.
There's a chapter in All of a Kind Family Uptown where the siblings eat dinner in the wrong apartment. Maybe?
In the 1970’s I read a book a couple of times that I borrowed from a children’s library.
It was about some children who were sent to visit an relative, but when they got to the house nobody was home. They had got the wrong date. The children had to fend for themselves for the evening. Anyone any thoughts? It has bugged me for years!
Could this be the meg mystery books by Holly beth Walker ?
can’t remember the name of this one children’s book or much about it other than the design of the book containing a pattern much like the beginning of saved by the bell (think squiggles and geometric shapes from the 80s). i wish i had more info, i’m so frustrated. i’ll take any name of any book anyone remembers having that kind of pattern somewhere in between the pages
I am seeking two children’s science books, probably published in the late ’70s. (The possible range would be mid-’70s to mid-’80s.)
They were written and illustrated by the same people, from the same publisher, were both large-format hardcovers, and had the same internal design.
The topics of the two books were 1) the solar system, and 2) dinosaurs.
The illustrations were vibrant watercolors that took up the entirety of each page spread.
Here’s the key identifying gimmick: both books were meant to be read with a kaleidoscope-like device. You could use the scope to follow a colorful “path” that wound through the illustrations, from page to page.
I would love to find one or both of these books again. (Just finding one would help me find the other.)
Hello! I’m looking for a board book from the 1990s. It was a small, yellow board book. It was about a grandma and grandchild, I think they baked cookies together. I think they were black. I’ve been searching “grandma and me” books for as long as I can remember, with no luck.
I had the book as a child in the early ‘90’s
The book was brown and had pictures in the centre of the front and back, embossed.
Collection of stories, one about a fire sprite and water nymph trying to be together. Illustration of them with a glass window between them.
One of the last stories in the book had to do with a stone walled off orchard and a giant keeping the children out. Something about the stigmata.
Thank you

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a YA Revolutionary War historical fiction book that I read as a kid in the late 60s or early 70s. It’s about a boy who helps Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox in SC. I remember that he helps blow up a wagon full of gun powder. The book was probably published between the 40s and 60s. Thanks for your help!
Can anybody recommend a few good bedtime stories that I can read aloud to kids or let them listen to on a good audiobook?
I recently picked up “Bedtime Stories For Kids (5 Minute Short Reads)” by E.J. Nightingale on audiobook and they loved every second of it.
In the mid 1980s, I would read two wonderful books to my young daughters. In fact, I did not read them as there was no text, just lovely illustrations. They were like pencil drawings, more or less monochrome – there may ahve been some muted colour. One book was called ‘Morning’ I am fairly certain and depicted the start fo the day routine for parent and child. The other may have been called ‘Evening’ or ‘Bedtime’ or something similar as it showed a young girl as she and her father prepare for her bedtime. They read together on the sofa; the child had a bath. The father made little boats from slices of melon skin with a cocktail stick for a mast which seh played with in the bath. The wonderful thin about a book with no text is that the children respond to it in their own way and develop their won language skills as they say what they see on the page. They were quite lovely and I would love to find them again. Thanks for listening! Carolyn
This suggestion may be wrong, but… “Go Up the Road” by Evelyn Sibley Lampman was published in 1972. I don’t see anything about Yolanda having a box, although her uncle has his important papers in a shoebox under the bed.
This is probably too late, but Amelia’s Road by Linda Jacobs Altman has a similar storyline (migrant family, box of treasures).
