I’m looking for a children’s book I read around the late 70s. It was a chapter book. I’ve been trying to remember the title for years! I think the cover was a sort of sepia or golden brown toned drawing of two girls making daisy (or dandelion) crowns, and I think it was called “The Wonderful Terrible Summer” or something similar. I may be putting the title with another book’s cover, but if either rings a bell, please let me know! I would particularly like to know what book that cover goes to!

Hello,

I’m trying to remember a book my sister and I had as kids. It was an illustrated book and we’re very soft more impression like images. There was a small child going on a journey, I think it was an girl, either at night or it ends at night. All along the way she sees people in need and gives away her belongings, one by one. She gives away bread and clothes. At the end she has nothing but the stars come down from the sky to cover her.

I’ve done a lot of searching, as has my sister with no luck.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

I am looking for a book my dad used to read to my older brother, in the early to mid 70s. It was a children’s picture book. It followed a group of animals, probably wild animals. One of the creatures was very small, probably a mouse, and he found a nail on the road. The animals are on a journey to nowhere specific, and they run into some trouble. Whatever happens, the little creature says, “I found this nail on the road, will it help?” The other creatures do not need the nail. At the end of the book, the creatures are all thirsty, and they come to a well to get some water. The crank on the handle is broken. The little creature says, “I found this nail on the road, will it help?” They use the nail to fix the crank, and they all get a drink of water.

Hi! I’m looking for a children’s book I had in the 80s, about a little crocodile who wanted to go to a party but they didn’t have a gift to bring. They were perfectly kempt for the party, but fell over and became dirty and the balloon etc got ruined. Can anyone help me find it?

Hey, I’m looking for a children’s picture book which must have been written before the early 2000s at the latest (and likely much earlier) where as far as I can remember, a kid finds a magic shop and is either left in charge while the owner is away or otherwise finds himself in the shop. While he’s there, all sorts of crazy and magical things happen, and he somehow manages to sort everything out. At the end, the owner returns and gives him a lollipop. It is possible some of the details are incorrect. It’s the lollipop scene at the end that stands out the most. I’ve done quite a bit of googling and chat-gpt-ing but haven’t been able to come up with anything that has that lollipop scene at the end.

Hi, looking for a book I read in probably the late 90s or early 00s. I remember it was a bedtime book about a child who goes off with a pack of lions in a desert (or maybe just somewhere sandy?) and hangs out with them, eventually sleeping I think. It was very pretty, more photorealistic, the pages I remember had a very sunset-themed color palette. The child might have started in their bed and then some of the walls sort of abstractly turned into another world, but maybe I’m imagining that part. I also feel like the lions had wings but not sure. Any help is welcome! Google is not being helpful.

Great! Thanks Suzanne.

I am getting an error message when I try to attach pictures to my post, but I will share this link to the scan from my cloud storage.

Here is the text of the pages I have:

Mother is busy,
She’s making a pie.
But we do the farm work,
My dad and I.
Together, together,
We scatter the seeds,
We shear the sheep,
We pull the weeds.
We milk the cows,
We pet the goats,
We fix the fence,
We cut the oats . . .
Hand in hand along with Dad,
Around the farm with my dog Lad.

Winter, springtime, summer, fall,
Ours is the nicest farm of all.
But sometimes I wonder what I will be
When I am as old as – twenty-three!
I think of this, I think of that,
Till there I am in a trim gray hat . . .

I’m a mailman!
Tramp tramp tramp
I walk for blocks,
And I put Something Special in everyone’s box!
Woof, woof, say the dogs
As I walk through their yards,
But on I go, carrying
Letters and cards.
Then after I’ve brought
Everybody some mail,
I pick up a hammer
And drive in a nail –
Wham!
And there I am . . .

I’m a carpenter!
Bang goes my hammer,
I’m nailing down floors
And putting in windows
And hanging up doors.
Zing goes my saw
And I never stop
Till I’ve built a fine house
With a red roof on top.
Then I pack up my hammer,
I say, “Toodle-oo!”
And quick as a wink, There I am . . .
at the zoo!

I’m a zoo-keeper, see,
With a broom, and a key.
I’m walking the camels
And feeding the bears,
I’m stoking the lions
And sweeping their lairs.
I’m teaching the monkeys
And training the seals.
I’m giving the hippos
E-NOR-MOUS big meals!
Now evening is coming, the zoo has to close . . .

Presto and Change-o!
I wear a red nose . . .
Now I’m a clown
With a painted-up face.
I’m tumbling and jumping
All over the place.
My clown suit is baggy
(It’s puffed up with air!).
I wave to the children
I see everywhere.
See my duck in his bib?
See my dog in his bow?
See my string of balloons,
And my nose all aglow?
But all of a sudden
I catch on a hook,
And everyone shouts to me,
“Look, mister, look!”
Bang goes my clown suit-
A Shoosh! Then a pop! . . .

Then I hold up my hand
And the traffic must stop!
For I’m a policeman
At Walnut and Main.
Are you looking for Somewhere?
I’ll stop to explain.
Now, go, Jim and Johnny.
Go, Kathy and Joan.
Stop, Little Puppy,
Out walking alone!
Then all of a sudden
My day’s work is done,
So I find me a horse
(With a saddle, of course!)
And I strap on my gun. . . .

Now I’m a cowboy, a-riding along,
A-jingling my spurs and a-singing my song.
Across the Great Prairie I ride far and near
To round up the cattle and rope a wild steer.
Then I tie up my horse (and I feed him, of course!).

Yippi-yi! Now I’m going. . . .
I jump in a boat,
And away I go rowing.
Now I’m a fisherman
Out on the sea,
Where there’s nothing but water
And fishes – and me!
Riding a wave
I see something afloat.
It’s a whale come to visit-
He’s rocking my boat!
Then whoosh! comes a wave,
And it gives me a smack . . .

And I call to my daddy,
“Hello there, Im back!”
“Just in time for a snack,”
Says my daddy.
And then . . .
Off we go again!
Together, together,

(scan cuts off here)

Hello! I am trying to figure out the title, author, or any other information of an illustrated children’s poem that my mom read in the mid-to-late 60s. The book is in English and was available in the United States.

It starts with a boy doing farm work with his dad and dog. Most of the book is the boy imagining different jobs he could have when he grows up – he daydreams about being a mailman, carpenter, zoo keeper, clown, policeman, cowboy, and fisherman.

I actually have a scan of most of the book and could post pictures + text, if that is allowed on this forum.

Hi, I am looking for a book I used to read (early 2000s) the illustrations were very colorful and ornate and I think that it was a fairytale set in the middle east or India. I know that there was a princess and a prince and at one point the princess switched her voice with a bird and it sounded bad and scratchy. I also think she switched her voice with a bird like a blue jay and it was really pretty. I think the prince was blind maybe. I remember there being an illustration of a pavillion. I would really appreciate help with this! Thank you!

I’m looking for a children’s book that was about a family of Cats. They were illustrated quite anthropomorphic or human like. They wore clothes like you would see in a more rural/older generation. Particularly I believe the mother cat wore a farm type dress and the main character a young cat wore overalls and no shirt. I remember one page in particular there was a dog drawn who was angry perhaps shaking his fist as the main character who maybe stole some milk or trespassed on the farm the dog owned. The book was hard cover and it was read to my by my grandmother in the early 90s so would have been published prior to that. I’ve searched google images for the book for hours as well as eBay, I guarantee you its not a popular book or something from Disney/golden books. My sister and I always called the book “The cat family” but that doesn’t seem to be the name. I remember the cover being yellow my sister things it was red so maybe that would be the case, it was beautifully illustrated but I can’t recall the plot really.

I am looking for a vintage children’s paperback book, that has a black cat on the front, and is Halloween themed. I remember that I bought this book at a school book fair and I fell in love with it. The parts that I remember are; the cat would sit on a fence every evening all by himself because he had no owner and was alone. At the end of the book the cat talks to someone in a house and tells the woman whom is always sad or upset and always wears a frown I think, “did you know that if you stand on your head the frown turns into a smile”. This is basically all I remember. I would appreciate anyone’s suggestions please! Thank You, ..S

Looking for a children’s book that I remember reading in the early 90’s. Might have been about a duck/swan in a lake/pond, and I think there was something to do with pollution or the pond being destroyed. Remember it being pretty grey, and maybe it was part of a series of books (maybe there was also a holiday book). It’s not one of the obvious results I see when searching for those keywords.

I’m looking for a book i read around 2000/2001, so it was probably wrote in the 90s. I believe it was a YA book. A woman is found murdered in her house, her sister is suspicious of her husband. The sister that is still alive ends up kidnapping the dead sister’s baby son. They live on the East coast, maybe like north or south Carolina. And she embarks on a trip with her nephew across the United States to get to her grandma’s old house. I think the house is in Louisiana. She ends up reconnecting with someone she knew as a child. I think he was doing yard work at the old house. Eventually she is found and has to take her nephew back. But I can’t remember what else happens.

I seek a book I remember from my early childhood. The book was most likely purchased for my older sister, who was born n 1938. I recall the book was a hardcover and somewhat oversized but not especially thick. It contained several different stories, but was not a Mother Goose collection. The stories were more like Little Red Riding Hood, etc. It had colorful full-page pictures, one of which I recall vividly. It showed a hunter with his rifle standng next to dead bears lying on the ground, not the best picture for a children’s book, but a memorable one.
I would appreciate any help in finding this book.

I remember a young children’s book about an old man who lived in a cabin deep in the swamp. He goes to bed one night and begins to hear noises. Something is coming closer and closer. He sends out his hounds but they never return. At one point the “creature” is climbing up the foot of the bed. I know it sounds morbid, but it was well done and lots of fun to read. (seems like either the man or the “creature” kept repeating a mantra of some kind.) Anyway, my kids loved it. Would love to have it for my grandkids.

She felt like the title was something similar to ‘Thessaly’ or ‘The Thessaly’
The plot revolves around a boy with one arm

It’s set around wartime

A book I read when I was VERY YOUNG back in the 80s.

It was a children’s picture book. The main characters were a doll with a broken face and a teddy bear that was missing an ear. They were riding a train to maybe? a hospital? I know they were going somewhere to get repaired. They passed by a river of lemonade– there was a 2 page spread on the lemonade river with them taking a drink while the train went by.

Trying to google? Absolutely no help whatsoever.

I’ve been looking for a Childrens book we had growing up but the only problem is I only remember the illustrations. So here is what I remember it’s about a group of Children with Victorian and Edwardian style houses that match the children that live in them (color wise) the children I think all leave their houses to go out and play together I remember there being a rope swing, mud, maybe a pond, maybe a dog, and some kind of fruit (I’m pretty sure it was cherries but it could’ve been apples or peaches)

The only author I’ve come across that looks familiar to the style it was is Muriel Dawson but I can’t find any books she illustrated.

I am looking for a children’s book I read in the early 1980’s which depicted strange made up creatures. There was a man and a dog that journeyed through the countryside/woods encountering these creatures. The creatures were not the typical fantasy creatures (ex. elves, fairies, etc.) but rather were quite made up by the author. I don’t know if there was an actual story or if it was more of a picture book. I recall the illustrations being more of a black & white pencil drawing look to them. I remember one illustration of the man & his dog fighting one of the creatures and I distinctly remember the man had a pocketknife. I am thinking there was a table for each creature that listed basic traits like Name, Food, Habitat, Enemies, … etc. because after reading this book I went on a creative binge making up my own creatures by drawing them and using this same format for basic traits of each.

I have been searching for this book for decades but cannot pinpoint it. Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

I am looking for a children’s book I read in the early 1980’s. I don’t recall much other than there was a boy who magically transformed based on idioms spoken about him. In one specific instance, he wanted candy from his mother while walking home and the mother called him a little piggy, to which he became a little pig. The boy cried and learned to exercise self-control and turned back into a boy again.

Hey all, I am looking for a book that is about a group of kids who go on a detective mission after there is a crime at what I think was the local lodge which was on a lake. I believe the kids had a fort on an island in said lake and from there did their detective work. The end of the book resulted in the discovery that someone had stolen silver dinnerware from the “lodge”, and had hidden it in a duffel bag and thrown it into the lake that the lodge was on. I remember that the cover showed a night scene of the lake with the moon and perhaps a canoe as well. I remember when I read it thinking that some had been died and thats what had been thrown into the lake because one of the kids alleged to have seen that happen. I recall reading in grade school in the early 2010’s but it could easily have been older. I know this is vague but your help is greatly appreciated!

I’ll see if I can get it through the library. Thanks so much, Mama Squirrel!

I’m looking for a book that was probably published in 1960s about a small seemingly abandoned house on a city street with high rises being built around it. Two girls use it as a clubhouse. The mean landlord tries to run them off but they give him a cookie they baked and he turns into a friendly guy. They fix up the little house and turn it into a bakery. It was illustrated with pen and ink drawings. Thanks for any help in finding this book!

Hi, I am looking for a book I read in the early 1970s. I think it probably was a scholastic book. It was about a girl who sees lights at night in the apparently abandoned house/mansion next door. At some point, she investigates and finds herself roughly a hundred years in the past hanging out with girls around her age – either time travel or haunting, I’m not sure. I think the ghost girls all had names that started with L, and there were more than a couple of them. The protagonist wants to get home (of course).

I have tried searching the internet to no avail.

Thank you so much for reading my query.

Hi, I am looking for a book my mother read to me in the early 1980s about a young African-American girl who was told to peel carrots for her mother, or her grandmother, and she would talk about how it stained her hands orange.

That’s the only memory I have of it, but I can clearly see the illustration in my head.

Hello, I’m looking for an illustrated children’s book with many short stories. each story would be only a couple of pages and each page was beautifully illustrated. i can’t find it anywhere. from what I remember there were at least 30 stories. cover of the book had an illustration with some of the characters from the stories and a red border. here is an example of some of the stories I can remember:

-a snail that takes a ride on a kite.
-mice that sleep in walnut shells
-a caterpillar in a Christmas tree
-a rabbit who wants to build a faucet so he doesn’t have to go get water from a well

– animals jumping out of a tree house onto a fireman blanket
-a story about bear and fizzy soda

Thank you in advance!

I am looking for a nook my parents used to read to me in the eighties. It was about a little bear who was messy and wouldn’t listen to his parents and pick his clothes up. One night the wind blew in and stole all his clothes and hid them in a tree.

Hello, I am looking for a kids short chapter book available around 1995-1999 era. I think it had a cover with a cartoonish moon on it and it had 6 or 7 chapters. The book tended toward slight surrealism. Some story snippets I remember are a bakery truck in a forest with a word or cryptic word on it, and an ornate glass house that a girl walks in to and hangs out in. Bless you if you know this book, I have been looking for it for 25 years after regrettably donating it out!

Hi everyone! I’ve been on the search for a book I had as a child in the 80s. I don’t remember too much about it so I’m having a hard time finding it. What I do remember is that it’s a big, yellow hardback book about animals. At the end of the book, 2 animals (I believe they are a monkey and bunny) get into a boxing match. This is all I remember and it feels like a fever dream lol Any help is appreciated!

Hello. A long time ago i read a book about two sisters. One sister didn’t really like her sister, they were fighting over their Grandma’s broach and who got to have it. One day her sister falls into a dam and she drowns. At the end the sister gives her dead sister their grandma’s broach at her funeral.
I can’t remember much else about it. There were pictures but they weren’t in colour. The cover was navy blue. I’m 90% sure the girls were sisters, but maybe they were cousins? The title had something to do with Fate- like fiddling fate or riddling fate- i’m not sure if that’s something i made up as a child. This was about 15 or so years ago.
I’m also Australian, so i’m assuming it was an Australian children’s book?

Hi. I’m looking for a children’s storybook from the 80’s or 90’s. It had a royal blue hard cover and had multiple stories about cartoon animals. I remember a zebra and a red balloon was in one of the stories. I carried this book with me everywhere when I was little and it was left in the rain. Any help would be appreciated!

I believe I found it. “The Fish” by Dick Bruna.

A hungry fish becomes despondent as he watches the swans and ducks eat all the food in the pond.
A little fish is unable to get any bread, until he saves a little girl from drowning.

I’m looking for a hardcover collection of spooky/ghostly short stories for children that I think must be very obscure. To the best of my knowledge, it would have been published between the eighties to the early 2000s – it’s definitely not newer than that, and I don’t think it is older. I read it in 2003 or thereabouts, when it had already been in my grade school library for some time. It had color illustrations which were reminiscent of Geraldine McCaughrean’s style (though I don’t believe she was actually the illustrator). It was not Grizzly Stories, Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark, In a Dark, Dark Room, or any other of the dozens of nineties-era scary-story-for-kids books out there on google; and I believe it must have been published in the UK, so any brit commenters might have a better handle on which book this is. I remember a couple stories from this book: one about a man with either a hook, a lantern, or both in a wood at night, encountered by some kids; one about a boy who repeatedly sees a black dog (like a church grim or a black shuck? it was sort of folkloric) outside his school, home, etc; and one about a boy trying to get rid of a blankie that just won’t go away. I have a strong image in my mind of an illustration for that last story: a yellow dog holding a blue blanket in his teeth. Any help tracking this down is appreciated!

Looking for a picture book; the publication date should be prior to 1970. The book itself is small (both physically, and in terms of story length). It has simple sentences (and pictures – no shading, plain color backgrounds, primarily dark blue). The plot follows a little girl who feeds ducks buns and one day falls in the river. The ducks ignore her, and a fish saves her. If I recall correctly, she wears a red raincoat.

I spoke to my mother about it, and she thinks the title is “The Fish”, and that it was written by a Scandinavian author… but every search has come up dry!

Might be ” The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” by Barbara Robinson (published in 1972)?
Haven’t read it in a long time so i don’t know if it has “and Leroy” specifically, but it would make sense to structure a sentence like that for comedic effect based on the story context, and your post feels like that’s ringing a bell? It’s not in a collection of short stories, but it is a quick read, and I’ve seen abridged versions in textbooks that she might’ve come across as a teacher and be remembering.

Maybe one of the Madeline children’s books? There’s one where Madeline and Pepito join a circus caravan, with one of the page’s art including a dancing bear, and when they want to leave they are trapped somehow before escaping. My copy is a collection of 6 Madeline stories so I’m not sure of the exact title for the one with just the circus story

Hoping someone out there can help me locate a children’s book from my childhood 🙏🏼 I’ve scoured the internet and and off for years but to no avail 😔

I owned it in the early 90s so likely published 80s or early 90s. It was a hardcover book, and the picture on the front was mainly the base of a tree in the centre with a nighttime dark blue background, I think an owl was on the tree. When you opened the front cover you had a map of the story which took you around the woods (which was the story) with various animals along the way.

Does anyone recognise this story?

I’m looking for a book where either a child or children are in a big/manor house, I think at night time and are looking for something.
They then have to hid and either a local man/burgular breaks in to the house looking for the same thing.
One of the children hide in a fireplace and I believe there are secret steps in the fireplace also but not sure.
This book would have been around in the mid nineties but published way before
Thank you

Hello. I am looking for a book I read possibly in the late 60’s or early 70’s. It was a children’s picture book about a stone that looked boring and gray but when the stone got wet it had beautiful colors just like the sky at sundown. I have been wondering about this for years and often think of it when I see a beautiful sunset

Hi all I’ve been on the hunt for a book I read when I was little. I’ve been looking because i want to share it with my son & my niece. All I remember is there are pigs on a farm that play dress up,watch tv, & cook. They basically run through a goldilocks type routine while the farmer went to run errands. It’s kids picture book from the late 80s to mid 90s around the time that pickle things by Marc Brown came out. I only remember that because mom bought pickle things and this book at the same time. For context I was born in 1995 the Mark Brown book pickle things came out in 92 I think. I have asked my mom she does not remember what it was called. I just really want to find it that way me and my sister can share these books with our children.

I’m wondering about a book that I read in the 2000s but it felt like an older book. The protagonist was a boy in a wheelchair, and I seem to relieved he didn’t speak as well. Something about the neighborhood kids including them in his play. There is one scene where he is laying out in the yard on a blanket watching ants go by.

Hi! I am looking for a children’s Christmas book. It was small. Maybe 6×6 in size. It was cloth covered cardboard? Red and maybe gold trim. It was cute little drawings of a family cutting down their tree and coming back for hot chocolate. My guess it was a book perhaps from the 50’s? Not sure. It was read to us when I was about 3. I am 60 now.

Hello, looking for a children’s book please about a school washed away in a flood. Book designed for approx 8-12 year olds reading age. The school children are in the building as they watch the waters rising. The school uproots and sails away intact. If memory serves, they may climb onto the roof and rig some DIY sails from material found in the school, or else the interiors of the school remain usable and everyone stays indoors (imagine the movie Up but a school, and in a flood). Possibly the floods recede and the school arrives back to where they started. I believe it had large (watercolour?) illustrations taking up most of the pages, in dark colours. Read this in the late 1990s, in Ireland. Thanks for any help!

The book I’m looking for I read in my 90’s childhood. I remember it being purple on the cover with a yellow drain – about a monster or creature in the drain. If my memory isn’t faulty, it had the look of the old submarine helmet. The cover was hard, but the book was relatively thin and the cover had a hole that you could see through to the title page, but I don’t think the hole went all the way through the book.
