A young adults book, a young boy lives with his mother in an old salon that is no longer used by anyone, he is convinced to run away to live with other homeless kinds in an abandoned church, a leader being some other kid who acts like a king I think he wears a crown or something and there’s one of the kids who gets locked inside and old bell

Hi – I’m looking for a book that my wife described to me from her childhood (possibly from 70s or early 80s) that had orange binding (with embossed name on cover in lower right) and was about a wandering giant that gets shot with arrows by small villagers. He cries and floods the land and the villagers float up to the giant’s head and see that he is just lonely and are able to talk with him. Possible name is “The stranger” but not sure. Thanks for any help!

i’m looking for a story from when my mom was a kid (she was born in 1980, so i assume before then). she says it was from a kids learning book or something, and it was a thing about a little boy named tommy and every time he would hide (i assume hide and seek?), some body part would be peeking out so he got found. i don’t have much more info but i really wanna find this for her.

A book about mothers from the child’s perspective the book was mostly in black, gray, and white it showed a mom walking in the rain with short hair and another illustration of a jar of lollipops with something along the lines of “mom lets us have lollipops”. The book was wider than long but I can’t remember much else unfortunately. Any ideas are welcome

I’ve been trying so hard to find a book that I read in elementary school, about two groups of boys who are playing king of the hill… They started throwing rocks at each other and hitting each other with sticks and went into an all out brawl, only to all become friends at the end all bloodied with missing teeth. It was my favorite book and a child and have been trying to find it for years. If memory serves, it was black and white sketch type art with maybe a little bit of color. I would guess from the 40’s. Thanks for looking!

Hi, trying to find a children’s book I read in late 90s early 00s but could have been from before this. A young girl didn’t look after her house, like she would leave the cap off toothpaste, not tidy up etc. The house and contents came alive and didn’t want her there. I seem to remember the house chasing her away.
Not much to go on, but tia

The book I’ve been trying to remember the name of had a little boy that was either small to start or maybe shrunk at some point in the story and all I remember is that he flew in a little red? Airplane around the house and maybe outside too…the illustrations were crisp, bright, I can see them still in my head but can’t for the life of me remember anything else! Any ideas would be amazing!

Looking for a series I started around middle school (early 2000’s) where there’s a boy whose parents went missing hunting artifacts of protecting artifacts, the boy is middle school aged but gets dragged along with his guardian different places and ends up solving mysteries. One of them I remember was set in a desert and involved a statue going missing I think, and it had like gemstone eyes, maybe a ruby or emerald? TIA to anyone who can figure this out, I want to read it with my oldest kiddo now!

You said you have four pages. Are the other two also animals? If so, that could narrow it down to animal alphabet books rather than the broader category of general alphabet books. The inclusion of an obscure genus from an equally unheard-of order of insects for “X” seems like an odd choice if the entire collection isn’t all animals. In a more general alphabet book, I’d expect them to go with a more familiar object like “xylophone” or “x-ray.”

On the other hand, the style of the illustrations – with identical formatting on both of the pages you showed, and the artist’s initials prominently placed in the same spot on both pages – could indicate that they’re not from a book at all but were produced as stand-alone prints.

It would be helpful to see the other two pages, and also (if you can open up the frames to take a peek at the back without damaging them) to see what – if anything – is on the back side of those framed pages.

Suzanne Price
January 2, 2022 6:42 pm

Hello Jane, So do you think the initials are FS or SF, something else? How old is the paper, would you think (because the orange shade and the design have an early 20thc look, but maybe a modern reprint or artist)? Did you have them framed.. was there anything at all on the back of the illustration? Did it seem to be cut out of a book? If it comes from a book and has a blank verso it is probably older. An alphabet, I assume. That dog looks familiar

Looking for a children’s book, hard cover from 30’s, 40s, or 50’s , about animal stories from a forest or jungle, title was similar to “Spider and company” , but not necessarily about spiders – spider may just have been the name of the title character. The cover showed a picture/drawing of a large elephant in front of a forest or jungle, and it may be that the name of the elephant was Spider, and the company was his animal friends from the forest. Spider may also have been the name of one of the animal characters, perhaps a terrier dog.
Tks..

Hello I m looking for a book about a family specifically there were 5 children growing up. All I remember is one character was named Sarah. It was about old American family events like one time she lost a book from the library and all the children pitched in to pay it back. Another time child didn’t want to eat her dinner. They also had a chapter when they went to a fair and one kid ate a pickle. It’s very frustrating because there’s no central plot, it was just a sweet book about growing up in vintage America. I think it may have been part of our readers digest library. Help and thank you.

If ANYONE can recognize this book, pls inform me. The book I am looking for:
An illustrated children’s book I read around 2013, so it’s not too old.
It was a very DARK and MORBID book about a VAMPIRE young boy in a vampire family who lived in darkness and fear. The boy, if I remember correctly, was curious and wanted to see the light, since he was a vampire who had to hide in the dark. The book had AMAZING and emotive illustrations, like surrealist paintings, realistic but with a fuzzy texture. I remember the setting was in a dark cave/slum-like place and beyond was a city with sunlight that coated the cliffs above. The boy tried to climb some tower/cliff to reach the SUNLIGHT but started to wither/burn.

When I was little I had a cardboard? Book that was shaped differently.. i think it was about going to bed? It mainly had beautiful illustrations of a little girl riding a rocking horse, she was like travelling in clouds and stars? The art was really colorful. I think the book was shaped like the girl on the rocking horse if that makes sense. I have been looking for this book for years. The book might have been from the 80s or 90s. “Bucket” by: Forrer, Eric

Date: 1993

summary:

Bucket the cat was a reincarnated pirate. He lived with Ellie

Kulikan, who owned a boarding house at the end of a dock in a fishing

village where old men with floppy hats told tales of such inventiveness

that they became the truth and were passed down to the local children as

the history of the town. One day the cool, dreamlike sea turns

dangerous, and an adventure falls into the life of Bucket and Ellie and

their woodchopper friend Olaf. Lost, the three find shelter in a magical

place where Bucket had been once before, two hundred and forty-seven

years ago, but he can’t quite remember its name. Beautifully illustrated

by his artist/teacher mother, Forrer’s poetic tale of gentle mystery

and wry humor reflects his own diverse career on the water, in

boat-building, commercial fishing, writing, and ocean freight.

I am trying to recall a book that my grandmother read to me in the 80s. I believe it was actually my uncle’s book so it could have been published as early as the 50s.
It was a very thin hardcover book. I believe it was green or there was a tree and maybe a boy on the cover.
And the story was about a boy going out into the woods maybe. And I think there was a bear that he wasn’t afraid of.
The most memorable part of the book, though, was that he said several times throughout, “I’m big and I’m brave, I am.”
I asked my uncles and they do not remember the book title but definitely remember the book.
Thank you in advance for the help.

You’re right. Sorry! According to Zempel’s Harcourt publisher’s statements, a 1942 first should be Harcourt, Brace and Company and stated “first edition” (between 1936 and 1947). But children’s books aren’t always consistent. Do you know if the first of this book was stated? If not, I’d inquire further about the Wielinski book in case it mentions other titles. (the 1964 printing seems to be HB and World)

Hello Hannah,

I’m afraid that a 1942 book should read “Harcourt Brace and Company” (ie no “World”) I didn’t realize that you were trying to ID you own book.

Harcourt, Brace and World existed only from 1960-1970. The “66” probably means 1966, and the HBW 1964 that is listed on abe confirms this.

Identifying 1sts of children’s books is just maddening! Enjoy your almost 60 year old book anyway. It’s a very nice book.

Hi, I’m looking for a children’s book that I read about 30 years ago (late 80’s and early 90’s). It was about a girl who did a kind of play in her own room, and dressed up as different animals with the clothes in the closet. I don’t really remember much else, what did stick in my mind is the girl disguised as a bird (not with feathers, nor in a realistic way) but as a representation of the bird, since she had black and white horizontal striped stockings, and the beak was like two black cones placed on its head. Mr. Snitzel’s Cookies by Jane Flory

Mr. Snitzel is the kindly but down-on-his-luck baker who shares his food and home with a raggedy man and his dog – and is rewarded with a magical supply of ingredients, allowing him to bake all day long – and earn plenty of money.

The greedy grocers, Mr. and Mrs. Manypenny – who had turned away the shabby man the first time – welcomed him in after learning about Mr. Snitzel’s fortune. The next morning, he advised them to choose wisely what they would do first, because that would be what they’d do all day. When they got to the store, they immediately started clearing space for all the money they expected to make – dumping out a box of carrots and sweeping a clear space on the floor – and were then stuck spending the entire day dumping carrots and sweeping, so of course, made no money at all.

Hello, I am looking for a picture book I read in the 90s, what I remember most was the imagery and I’ve been trying to find it for years.
The story was something with a young girl who goes to a house where a witch of sorts lives. Maybe the girl is a captive? Servant? Not sure. The “witch” character looked kind of like Augra from Dark Crystal, with knobbly knuckles and bulging eyes.
The illustration was all kind of sketchy/knobbly with bramble borders and rose hips (or maybe pomegranates?)
Any ideas are welcome, thanks in advance!!

I am looking for a young children’s book about a little boy who lives with his grandmother. They are either Polish, Russian, or Eastern European because the women wear scarves on their heads and long skirts. The little boy gets into mischief. One of the first stories is where his grandmother goes shopping and tells him not to let the animals in the house, but the animals trick him into opening the door and then they eat up all the cakes his grandmother had prepared. In another chapter, his father returns from travel and brings a pair of red boots for his younger sister, and he feels jealous. The book had a yellow cloth cover with a small picture in the middle.

I’ve been searching for years for a book from my childhood (during the 90s). My memory of the details is very hazy but I think it was a short story in a larger collection of stories. It involved a man and his wife who, in desperation, ask for some kind of favour from a bit of a sketchy character that I want to call a goblin or an imp? The goblin/imp demands their young daughter as payment but when the couple refuse he puts the girl under a kind of enchantment so that she will sleepwalk to him in the night. He might play a flute? Her parents discover this however, and tie her to the bed each night so that when the imp plays his flute she is prevented from going to him. I can’t remember clearly what happens next but the imp ends up foiling the husband and wife’s efforts to keep their daughter safe and I have an image of one of the illustrations in my mind where the imp is riding back to his cave with the girl sitting on the back of his horse looking pretty smug with himself. Anyone have any ideas?

Dream box and keeps repeating he will never be 10, I believe was the age. The boy who will never be 10 only 9. The story i believe was in a compilation booklet from elementary school

I am looking for a children’s chapter book about a Eastern European family. They have a son, and they are visited by his cousin (girl) from the city who gets into mischief. I recall she climbs up to the top of their indoor fireplace when she arrives. The children have chores to help on the family farm, the son helps break horses and they ride. They wear traditional eastern European dress and decorate eggs for Easter (Christian) and go to the town for a festival or market day. Does anyone know the title and the author?

Hi, I’m looking for a children’s book that I read about 30 years ago (late 80’s and early 90’s). It was about a girl who did a kind of play in her own room, and dressed up as different animals with the clothes in the closet. It was a picture book. I don’t really remember much else, what did stick in my mind is the girl disguised as a bird (not with feathers, nor in a realistic way) but as a representation of the bird, since she had black and white horizontal striped stockings, and the beak was like two black cones placed on its head. Thanks for your help!

I am looking for the title of a book from the mid to late ’80s. It was about a diamond thief living next door to a child. The diamond thief dressed like a woman to disguise himself. That’s pretty much all I can remember about it, though we read it over and over and it also had an audio book. Does it sound familiar to anyone?

I am looking for a book that I read a lot as a child in the early/mid 80s. I vaguely remember the main character was some kind of animal, a porcupine, perhaps but not positive. He wandered into the woods and it got dark, and while he was lost, everything looked like scary monsters. In the morning when his dad finds him, he takes him for a walk to show him that all the things he saw were not monsters (ie, the big monster with glowing eyes and one arms was a tree with an owl sitting in it, another monster was just a glow worm on a tree trunk) I would love to read it to my daughter but for the life of me cannot remember the title or author. Please help!

Hello! I am looking for a young reader book (chapters book with pictures) that I read in the mid-90s where the main characters are a mom, her son and daughter, and a homeless man they befriend who helps them survive a difficult situation. I have two memories of passages that stand out: one, at the beginning of the book, where the homeless man is described having his “breakfast” by sitting outside of a bakery and breathing in the smell of bread. The family at one point is sheltering in a warehouse and they are helped by a group of travellers (they are called g*psies in the book), and the boy is reprimanded by his sister for loitering with the traveller boys. Does anyone else remember this book and help me identify the title?

Thanks so much for offering your expertise. I am looking for a book from my childhood (the 80’s). It was small in size and maybe a light or turquoise blue. I can picture the sweet, jolly baker on the cover. In the story, he doesn’t have much money and the story is about making wishes. He sings “Wish come true, wish come true, if it can happen to me, it can happen to you. There isn’t much you have to do to make your dearest wish come true.” He bakes cookies with his limited supplies and his wish to become a successful baker comes true. It’s like a magic spell comes over him and he just bakes and bakes, never running out of ingredients. There is also an older couple who own a grocery store. They are envious of his success and I remember them sweeping the floor and emptying carrot boxes to put all their money in when the magic makes them rich (which doesn’t happen) and they get stuck doing this over and over under the magic spell. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I may be conflating 2 books, but I haven’t had any luck finding any leads on my own. I read this children’s picture book in ’88 or ’89 and I think it was a fable about how the tortoise got the lines in its shell. There were lots of animals trying to get fruit from a tree and the tortoise couldn’t reach them. Larger animals stepped on it and broke its shell. This is the part where I’m not sure if it’s part of the same story or not: the tortoise had a bell placed around its neck because it wasn’t supposed to look back and the bell would ring as a reminder if it tried to turn its head back.

Hello! I read a full color picture book when I was between 6-10 (early eighties) about either a beaver or an otter that was granted a wish to live forever. He never stopped growing and became very lonely and regretted his wish. He was allowed to pass on and the last pages were a very colorful depiction of the beaver or otter heaven. All of the beavers or otters were different colors in the after life. The whole book was written in cursive.

Seeking an illustrated book that might be from the 80’s but most likely the 90’s. The story is about the moon coming down in the form of a woman with shining hair that she has to keep covered with a hooded cloak because she has to be in disguise. Unfortunately, she is discovered by the dark creatures who would prefer her to not be in the sky at night and they drown her? Entomb her? In the swamp. She eventually is freed, but I cannot remember how. Ultimately she returns to the sky and this story, I believe, offers an explanation for the dark of the new moon. I have Googled and googled and cannot find this story. If anyone knows what the title is and who the author is, I would be much obliged!

I had a large volume book of short children’s stories in the 1960’s. I’m pretty sure the word “Illustrated” was in the title. The cover was yellow with smaller images on it. One story I remember was about the sun getting tricked into getting too close to earth and it’s “rays” were trapped under a log or something similar. I believe most or all of the stories were fairy tales. I think The Little Match Girl was in it. As I write, I’m thinking it was a collection of fairy tales from around the world?

Hello-I am looking for a hard cover “Golden Book” (I think)–it was a late 1950s(?) collection of stories and poems. I loved the front and back liner pages that showed the same country scene in all four seasons, spring, summer, winter, fall. There may have been a tiger(?) character on the cover that also appeared inside the book, pointing out things.

Hello! I’m looking for a book that had really cute drawings of the characters set in medieval times. I think one of the main characters was a peasant farmer. The characters were short, had round features, and were kind of stocky. I thought the cover had yellow on it but it has been so long I’m not sure. I found the book in the 90’s during elementary school but not sure when it was released. Thanks for any help!

Hello!
Looking for a kids picture book edition of Aesop’s fables. Had in the late 80s, early 90s. Green hardcover boards. Also there was an illustration of a man in a blue coat with one of those curly white wig type hairstyles (supposed to be Aesop, maybe?). There were stories of the ant and the grasshopper, fox and the stork, turtle and the doves, and more- but those are the one I remember.

Thanks!

Looking for a pink little hardback book about a young girl who grew up. Her dress became too short and some buttons popped off. She went from washing dishes at the sink standing on a small step stool to not needing the stool anymore. And she outgrew her hobby horse and got a real pony. So sweet!

I’m looking for a book from the 90s called “Where is Spring?” It’s about a cat who asks other animals “where” spring is. Each animal gives a different answer. The book was full of grammatical errors. For instance, the pig replies, “Spring is where the mud get warm.” (No S on “gets”.) The book has a panel of buttons on the side that played animal sounds, but it wasn’t a Golden Sound Story. It isn’t the book of the same name by Yang-Huan. This book has apparently completely vanished from existence and I’d like to see it again!

Hello,
I’m looking for a book I read in childhood, probably published in the 1980s or 90s. About a boy who is accidentally left behind on a family journey and fends for himself, living in a cave. I thought it was by Penelope Lively but can’t find anything similar in lists of her books.

I’m looking for a children’s picture book from the 90s (possibly older) about these little stuffed creatures (I keep thinking they were made from socks) who did things in a house. At the end of the book, there was a how-to that showed how to make the stuffed toys yourself.

Hi there, I’m looking for a book I had as a child in the early 2000s. It may have been published in the 90s. It was either an eye-spy type book (not by Eye Spy) or a counting book, but there were real photographs taken of elaborate sets with dolls and clowns and other toys, and the goal on each page was to either count a certain number of items or search for items.

I think it might have been C. W. Airne, Britain’s Story Told in Pictures Manchester: Sankey, Hanson & Co, (with a Revised Britain’s Story by Thomas Hope & Sankey-Hudson Ltd). Each of the eight books is a different colour , softcover with a drawing on the front and books in series listed on back, each book contains 64 pages and from 450 to 600 captioned illustrations; all 6.5×8.2. I do have a Fine set for sale but you can undoubtedly get individual volumes more inexpensively.

If your books were more modern than these, they may have been Unstead’s Looking at History: Britain from Cavemen to the Present Day, but not so many costumes, more action, in colour. If older perhaps Quennell’s, This is Historic Britain, but they had much more text.

Hello, I read a children’s book to my children in the 1980’s and I have never seen this book again. It was from the library and we renewed it over and over again. It is a story about a little girl with her toy stuffed Teddy Bear. Her parents take her in her stroller to the green grocer to buy their Christmas tree. During the trip she loses her Teddy Bear. The story goes on to follow the Teddy Bear in his adventure to find his way home. The illustrations were beautiful. I look for this book at Christmas time but I haven’t found it and unfortunately I don’t remember the title. Thanks to anyone who can help.

I’m trying to remember a book I had read years ago, when I was about 7-8. I unfortunately don’t remember much of the plot, besides the fact a boy (man?) had found a dragon-like egg which was suppose to be extinct, and decides to raise it after it hatches. The people weren’t human; they looked more like the main puppets from Jim Henson’s “The Dark Crystal”. I remember it was done in a completely black and white style. It looked like may have been either from the early 90’s. All I distinctly remember is that the art style was absolutely terrifying, and so off-putting that I hated even looking at the cover as a child. I didn’t own this book; I only read it at a Kid’s Club in a gym my mom worked at.

I am looking for a story name. I used to have a kids fairytale book which had a purple and yellow cover with gold covered pages. The particular story i would like to know about featured a house in the woods which i think was on stilts. A girl went to visit / lived at this house? The father went away somewhere. – I liked this story in 2005 or something so my memory is very vague but i was fond of this story and wanted to find out what the name of it is.
