Hello! I’m looking for a book, probably released in the 80s or 90s- in my memory, it was one of those Scholastic Apple paperbacks but not sure if my memory is serving me correctly.. It’s about a boy named Maximilian who goes on a roadtrip, I think, with his dad. His parents are divorced I think and he ends up spending the summer with his dad which he wasn’t too thrilled about. The thing I remember the most clearly is that Max’s middle name is Rainbow. His dad wanted to call him that because, per a Native American tradition, when he walked outside of the hospital right after Max was born, the first thing he saw was a rainbow. But his mom didn’t want it to be his first name because she was afraid kids would make fun of him. I think at the end of the book, once he comes to understand and love his dad more, he says he wants to go by Rainbow. If you couldn’t tell, my memories of this book are very shadowy and vague but I’ve been trying to find it for awhile and with no avail! If anyone is able to help out, it’d be much appreciated 🙂

I had a book that was just like the iconic “Where’s Waldo?” theme, but the book’s mascot was a small cartoon sheep and had you find random things like a potato, eskimo, camel, etc,. The book cover was a hard cover with a shiny finish and the picture was front to back when opened (as in you open it up and the picture combines as a panoramic at the spine) of a giant mix of search and find scenes that are in the book itself. I wish I could describe this better, but to sum it up it was an AWESOME search and find book!

Read it in the 1980s. A board book shaped like a car dashboard with cutouts to steer. Every page showed a different scene as you “drove” the car to the beach with your family.

My mom has been looking for a book she read as a kid in the early 60s. It was about a girl who was poor and only had 1 pair of shoes so she asks everyone for a pair of shoes for her birthday and holidays. She ends up with so many shoes that she can’t decide which one to wear so she ends up just wearing one pair again. Thanks for the help!

Looking for an old book that had a collection of fairytales. Was fairly large and contained what would be considered darker fairytales/stories.
The stories I can remember are “Wynken, Blynken, and Nod”, a shorty story about a witch who makes a potion to be younger and ends up turning into a baby. A story about a blue pig that flies… this book came into my possession around 1995-1999 and was quite thick.
If anybody know what this book is please let me know!

I’m having trouble remembering this book I used to read at my grandparents house. I’m in my twenties now so the book must be fairly old, as my mom used to read it as well when she was a child. I remember it was a book full of short stories about the same three characters. I don’t remember much about their names or the plot, I just remember it was one girl and two boys and they were best friends. The girl was taller and had a ponytail. One of the stories revolved around them going and working at a farm that belonged to a relative. The book was hardcover and was a greenish blue color and had a black outline of the characters on it. I know this is a longshot but was hoping maybe someone else knows which book I’m referring to.

Perhaps Landslide! by Veronique Day?

“Five kids – two sibling groups – are on vacation in the mountains. They go to see the oldest boy’s friend, an old man named M. Nortier. He is not there. They go in and go to sleep. While they are sleeping there is a landslide and they are trapped. No one knows they are there and no one is looking for them because the parents think they are somewhere else. After being trapped for days, they are able to send a message by flashing a message into the snow in Morse code using a mirror when the sunlight hits just right at a certain time of day. A boy in the village is home with a sprained ankle and sees it. With the help of the village teacher they figure out the message and the children are rescued.”

Otto: The Autobiography of a Teddy Bear by Tomi Ungerer?

Otto has a purple ink stain over one eye.

“A teddy bear recounts his creation in Germany before World War II, his arrival as a birthday present for a young Jewish boy, and his time with David and David’s friend, Oskar. When authorities force David to wear a yellow star and transport him and others away, Otto stays behind with Oskar. An African-American G.I. finds the bear after a bomb blast, a bullet hits them both, and because the bear absorbs the brunt of the blast, he saves the soldier’s life. Otto becomes the playmate of the soldier’s daughter until he is mauled by street boys, lands in a garbage pail, and eventually in an antique shop. From there the story takes an even more surprising and satisfying twist as Otto is reunited with his childhood friends. Ungerer’s large watercolors become dark and shadow-filled as the Jews are taken away, people hide in bomb shelters, and bombs explode in the city. In a particularly realistic spread, one soldier lies slumped over a tank in the distance while, in the foreground, readers see a prostrate soldier clutching his bleeding chest, another one trapped under rubble, and a bodiless outstretched arm. While the book touches on some difficult subjects, the story is told from the point of view of the bear, which makes discussion a bit easier for younger children. Otto appears scarred and battle-worn on the cover but is a survivor nonetheless, and his telling is matter-of-fact and unsentimental. A poignant and uplifting story.”

Hi i am looking for a book with very vague memory from the 90s. A book for older kids 8 years on wards . Book about 300pages with short stories by an american author was american stories. Coloured illustrations looked like from civil war era.One story from it with picture was when abraham Lincoln was young his laying on the grass reading a book. And another story is with a picture of a boy peeping from behind his cabin door in snowy weather looking at a moose getting close. And another story is about a greedy couple cutting open a goose to get more golden eggs. Also had a young thomas Edison story. Looked like american characters and stories. Could be a book from 50s 60s 70s 80s or may be 90s. It was torn with no covers. Would love to get it for my kids. Collection of stories. Was a lovely book if any one can help out

My daughter asked about books I read when I was kid. Immediately, a book came to mind, but I cannot recall the title. It was about two children, possibly siblings. I recall there was an avalanche, and I can recall the children communicating what I recall was a good distance using a mirror, the sunlight, and Morse code. I can’t even remember if it was the children who were caught up in the avalanche or whether they played an instrumental role in rescuing those who were. I don’t recall it being a well known book; a teacher’s assistant recommended it to me when I was in grade school. That’s one of the reason’s I have remembered as much as I have. Maybe Avalanche! by A. Rutgers Van Der Loeff?

I remember a book about a girl in Scotland whose parents were killed in a car crash. She and her brother were separated and she went to live with her scattered, artsy aunt. She didn’t like at first that her aunt didn’t have a regular schedule and had crazy artsy friends, but she grew to love her and her less structured life. I think it may have been called The High House. Does that sound like the right one?

My husband keeps talking about a picture book he loved when he was a child but he remembers very little about it. What he can remember is there is a dog (he thinks it was a golden retriever) that had puppies. The puppies are hard to confine so the owners build a pen for the dogs that only the mom can get in and out of. My husband was born on ‘91 so I’m assuming this book was written before the year 2000. I’m sure this is a long shot with so few details but I’m hoping it rings a bell for someone!

Hi All,

As a child my Nan use to read me a book about flower fairies and I was hoping to find out the name of the book, or even a name of the book that sounds similar.

The main flower fairy was called ‘Little Miss Bluebell’ and one day all of the fairies were playing in the forest when a little goblin came out of his mushroom house and started being nasty to the fairies. So Mrs Ladybird flew to the fairy castle and told the fairy Queen how nasty he had been. The fairy Queen then banished him to the witches castle to do all of her cleaning.

Nan passed away a few years back so I never got the chance to know the name of the story, but she read it to us every night and I would love to know the name.

Long shot here because the bear falls out of the sack, rather than into it – but maybe worth taking a look at The Bear Santa Claus Forgot by Diana Klimpton (1994)?

“A small stuffed bear, who falls out of Santa’s sack of toys into the sleigh, realizes that Santa has forgotten him. So all by himself, he must find the house where he is expected as a Christmas present. He bravely jumps out of Santa’s sleigh, lands on the right housetop, and slides down the chimney. On Christmas morning, Maddie finds him in some leftover wrapping paper. Although he is somewhat damp and dirty from his adventure, Maddie loves him anyway.”

Hi I know you help with “old” kid stories. I hope you can help me find mine. I think I first saw the story in a text book (I am sure it was for school). The story was about a women who could predict the future. They were definitely saying that she was a older woman. The people in the story or related to her I just can not remember how. The first thing in the story she predicted was that when one of her relation’s will break a needle on the sewing machine (I think she was making her (The girl who is sewing ,not the main character) wedding day). She tells one of the girl’s (not the main character) husband that she does not believe in gambling. There was also a boy who did not like The main woman’s sweaters and was forced to wear them. In the end the older woman saves the boy from getting hit by the School bus after exiting it by using her umbrella catch catch onto his sweater that she made and getting hit by it herself. The story ends by One of her relations and her husband talking about how she predicted that The boy was about to be hit The husband saying that he did not believe that she could change the future and the girl speculating that she saw that she was going to to hit and did it anyway. (though if you ask me , I would say into the cows go home that the older woman only saw up to the point of him about to be hit , which makes it her choice of what to do. This is a opinion I even has as a kid. I hope you can find the story. I am pretty sure the textbook used “real” story (as previously published stories that existed outside the book). It was definitely before I was in six grade. (as I do not think I have a Reading textbook between six to eight grade (I am definition sure there was no Reading text book in seventh and eighth grade as the school combined social studies and reading into one subject and called it humanities (I do not think they make social study Reading textbook fusions)) and it was definitely not high school story.) I also do not think it was before grade 1 as I had a lot of problems reading before that. I know this is long but I want you to have all you can to help you find it. I was in Grades 1-6 during the years of 2007 – 2013 (The range of years is not the exact number of grades as the first number is in September and the last is number is in June.) (I know some people are going to be offended at these years being considered old but I do not know how new the textbook was or how old the stories were before the textbook pick them up) (It was new enough that the lines where kids sign thare name and year they were in class did not spill past the pre made lines) (there are about nine Premade lines in the text book) (But not every textbook was not likely used every year as some years had more students than others.)

Hello there. I am looking for a childhood book that I remember reading in the 1990s. I really don’t know when it was published, but it is illustrated really beautifully – it is about a little girl who goes on a school trip in the mountains (in the USA or Canada, maybe). They go on a yellow bus and there are long shot illustrations of the kids going up the mountain/ hiking. The little girl falls and breaks her leg and she has to be airlifted off the mountain… I think the kids visit her in hospital – it’s so vague, but I remember the illustrations were so pretty (sort of like Mitsumasa Anno illustrations). If any one knows, I’d be delighted!

I’m looking for a book read to us at school in 1994-1995. Not even sure what the protagonist was, but I am thinking a mouse or fox, a smaller animal. The mouse, let’s say, has heard of this beautiful place far away and wants to visit it. His family disagrees and enumerates the dangers he will face and says he will for sure die on the way. The mouse follows his heart and leaves home. At the end, he makes it to that place and sits on a mountain top. I remember the last page’s illustration was him with his back to the reader, watching the sun set, gazing at the beauty around him and satisfied with his decision to leave. The moral of the story had been to follow your heart and have courage, a pretty deep one for an elementary student. Does anyone know which book this is? Thanks so much for your help!

Melissa

You could be thinking of ‘The Wicked, wicked ladies in the haunted house’ (also known as ‘The wicked pigeon ladies in the garden’) by Mary Chase.
Maureen Swanson is the scourge of the neighborhood. At age nine, she already has a reputation as a hard slapper, a loud laugher, a liar, and a stay-after-schooler. The other kids call her Stinky. So sometimes when Maureen passes the crumbling (and haunted?) Messerman mansion, she imagines that she is Maureen Messerman–rich, privileged, and powerful. Then she finds a way into the forbidden, boarded-up house. In the hall are portraits of seven young women wearing elaborate gowns and haughty expressions. Maureen has something scathing to say to each one, but then she notices that the figures seem to have shifted in their frames. So she reaches out her finger to touch the paint–just to make sure–and touches . . . silk! These seven daughters of privilege are colder and meaner than Maureen ever thought to be. They are wicked, wicked ladies, and Maureen has something they want. . . .

Looking for a children’s book, 1960’s or before. “new shoes for who? For me. Wonderful trunderful new shoes for me” is what I remember. It’s about a little girl shopping for shoes, and none of the more recent ones, including the Shirley Hughes one, so far are right. Any ideas? I think the title included the words “new shoes”, which hasn’t proved very helpful. Thanks!

I read the books in the 80’s…I remember the main characters were three cousins- their grandpa would leave clues so they could solve mysteries. Once I think he tied something to a berry bush. It may have been a short series. One time the boy cousin ate too much and was miserable, so the grandma gave him a glass of baking soda in water and told him to drink it in the bathroom because it would make him throw up. She told him at least he had the fun of eating all that food.

Hi! I am looking for a children’s/teen chapter book. The cover is a close-up painting/drawing of a red rose. The book is about a young girl who is at sleep away camp until she gets in trouble. Her two uncles come to take her to live with them. The uncles are described as “old world” and have a truffle hunting dog named Tartuffe. I think they own a shop where they fix old things like watches? The girl has a room at the uncle’s house with a huge rose mural painted on the ceiling. In the backyard of the house there is this metal “tower” the uncle’s built. The girl loves the tower but the city wants to tear it down for some reason. She camps out in the tower as a protest. Does anyone have any idea what this book is?? I feel like the title is one word.

Hi there, looking for a Christmas story once read to me and my sister some 30 odd years ago. The story was about a teddy bear who was accidentally knocked off a Christmas tree by Santa’s elves into Santa’s sack, which was later given to a young child whose gift had been forgotten at the North Pole. Could anyone please shed some light as to the name and author of this story? It’s become a long family tradition to have a little bear on our tree, and I wish to share the origin of our tradition with my young child. Thank you in advance. Merry Christmas all x

STILL LOOKING 😔

This is a LONG LONG SHOT probably impossible 😫 but hopefully someone may know or may have had it too as a child….

I had a children’s Christmas book around 1995 that came from the Book People (or a similar company) that came to my mums work place.

It was a large book between A3 maybe even A2 size, it had little coloured lights that came through tiny holes onto each page that flashed and it played music when you pressed a button.

It wasn’t an old fashioned looking book.

I unfortunately don’t remember the front cover picture (if I saw it I think I would!!) but I do remember one page had a large snowy scene with Father Christmas flying on his sleigh.

It was a thick board book.

I know this is not a lot to go on but I loved this book so much and would love to find it again for my children 🤞🏼

I’ve tried other search options but had no luck ☹️

Hello,
I have a vague memory of a children’s book I read as a kid (born in early 90’s but don’t know when the book was written). The book is about a boy who is a prince and either wants to be a regular boy or has a friend who is a regular kid. I think at the end, he gives up his crown? The illustrations stick out more in my mind—they are very simplistic, geometric shapes and primary colors. I believe the background was red. The boy’s heads are perfect circles and the crown is comically small for the one boy’s head. I remember one illustration has the boy with a large tear on his cheek, he was sad about something. (It is not “The Little Prince by Antione de Saint-Exupery)
I’m sorry, any clues are greatly appreciated!

I’m looking for a book for my mom from her childhood. She is 83 years old and says it was her favorite book. She believes it was called something like “Yellow is the Prettiest Color”. It’s based on an African American girl, and her favorite color is Yellow. Other then that, I don’t know much, she said her mom read it to her all the time when she was little. I have google searched, and have no idea! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I’m trying to find a nursery rhyme book from my childhood. I think I received it in 1995, but it may have been published a couple of years before that. It was probably something off a shelf but I can’t locate the specific publisher or book. From what I remember the book was more square than rectangular, probably like 1 1/2″ thick, and it had a padded white hard cover. I do remember that the first two pages had a marching band of animals playing instruments. The entire book was illustrated with colorful cartoon animals, like a purple hippo. There were at least 100 nursery rhymes in it, some that I haven’t seen in any other books. I read it so often that it fell apart and my mother threw it out! I’ve been searching for this book for 15 years and would really appreciate any help.

Hello! I’m looking for a Christmas book that was read to me in the mid 1990s by my sister – I didn’t know how to read, but I heard it so many times I memorized the book (and when to turn the pages). The book could have been in print in the 80s as well, because my oldest sibling was a decade older.

It was a hardcover book about a family of four bears (pretty sure not the Berenstain bears! The art style was different) during Christmastime. I don’t remember much about the plot, but the mama bear gets a lovely comb for Christmas. I think the papa bear gets a pipe, but I’m not sure. I believe the main character is the boy bear. I don’t remember what he or his sister received.

I am looking for a somewhat oversized book I had in 1963 or sometime around that time. It had a white cover and a pink inside page. I don’t remember what was on the cover though. It was old fashioned tales that seemed to be woodland type tales. I loved this book and still remember the absolutely gorgeous pictures! They were hauntingly beautiful. I don’t know why it was a larger than normal book, but it was!! I know I have not supplied very much information but I would love some help!!

Halsey’s Pride by Lynn Hall.

“Thirteen-year-old March, an epileptic, comes to live with her dog breeder father and through her growing attachment to her father’s prize dog, Pride, learns a great deal about love, truth, courage and how to cope with adverse fate.”

” When her mother returns to college, March Halsey, 13, is sent to live with her father, whose livelihood is breeding and showing collies. March discovers that she enjoys working in the kennel, finding particular pleasure in the love and loyalty of Pride, her father’s champion show dog. Skillfully defined and melded into the storyline is March’s epilepsy, which she keeps a secret from her new classmates, dreading the occurrence of a seizure in front of them. Epilepsy is not March’s only concern, however. When she accompanies her father to dog shows, she discerns that he is still basking in the glow of a one-time victory for Pride, who seems to be passing on a defective, fatal gene to his progeny. When March’s inevitable seizure occurs at school, she courageously confronts her classmates in an effort to remove the fear associated with epilepsy. This is no sugar-coated episode; Hall writes with insight and genuine understanding of teenage behavior.”

hello, I am looking for book that I read many years ago.
all i remember is that there was this bridge with doors (i think the doors led to different times/eras maybe) in a sort of stationary dimension place that was beginning to crumble – i remember scenes where the characters had to run as fast as they could because the stairs and bridge were shaking so much and the bridge and doors were beginning to crumble and crash down. there was also a scene where one of the male characters got a map drawn on their back by a cartographer who lived in a tiny-cramped-filled-to-the-brim-with-paper-and-books room.
any help is appreciated, thank you so much!

I am looking for a book from my childhood (early 90’s, and I think it wasn’t at all new then) that was about a child with epilepsy and her divorced parents and living with her dad and his show Collies. One of the Collies started alerting on her seizures. Hoping this brings up memories for someone so I can find this book because I train service dogs now and this book was my first motivating factor and I’d love to own a copy!

He’s staying with his grandparents and there is a snowstorm and he goes out to play in it, then comes back inside and eats oatmeal or something. I know this is not much to go on! It’s illustrated with sort of muted colors and I think the book cover was avocado green or mustard yellow. Thank you!

If it isn’t Fattypuffs and Thinifers, maybe take a look at Trouble for Trumpets by Peter Cross and Peter Dallas-Smith. The Grumpets aren’t particularly thin, but they are mean and from a cold region.

“Just as the Trumpets, summer creatures who live in a world of warmth and sunshine, prepare to hibernate, the Grumpets, winter creatures who live in the dark, frozen mountains of the north, prepare to take over their land.”

There is also a sequel, Trumpets in Grumpetland.

I’m looking for two favorite books from my childhood (1970’s). One is a learn to read book (very simple sentences) about a little boy and a rain cloud that always followed him around. I remember it being a thin white paperback.
The second may have been a Golden Book, but I’m not sure. It was about magical creatures (chubby fairy ladies is what I picture) who came into your house at night to clean and tidy up. Any help with either is very much appreciated! Thanks.

Samayo, if you want this back under your own name so you can get replies, just copy and paste the text below! I added your previous post below.
Suzanne

Adding to it the story the girl goes back home and they were shocked to see that she survived the storm and the birds. The family accepted her about her being musician and not do chores at home. One thing that I forgot about was that her birds each one can do something. Like one sings. The other do drums etc… I don’t remember it too will cause I read it when I was elementary school. I have so many grammar problems I hope that doesn’t confuse you guys. One more thing I think the book was a series and it was a children’s chapter book. Please tell me if you find it.

I’m looking for a book about a girl who loves music but her family or father disapproves it. She ran away but a storm happened. The storm was some kind of needles falling. She had to climb up a cliff into a cave and inside the cave she found eggs. When they started hatching some of them didn’t make it. In her world there’s dragons and some type of bird that is kind of like a dinosaur. What she found was the birds. Their females are bigger and more dominant than the male. In the girl’s village they hunt them down. It’s rare to even catch one. anyway she took care of them inside that cave and somehow accidentally taught them music. So yeah, most of the story is about her surviving and taking care of these birds during the storm. After the storm I think someone found but they took her and flew her on a dragon to a village where they have dragons and those dinosaur birds as pets.

Well you remember a lot about the book. Hope someone recognizes it ! Suzanne

Hello,
I’m looking for a book for my husband that he would get every year at Christmas time from the library. He says it’s called ‘Christmas Tree Farm’. He says it’s about a family that heads out west to Oregon because they inherited property with a home on it. There’s something about a forest fire on the property and them rebuilding from there and starting a Christmas Tree Farm after the fire.

Hello! I am looking for a children’s picture book that had a moon or haunted house on the cover and it had a purple sky type cover. It was probably published from 1990’s to early 2000’s. I don’t remember the plot but I do remember that it was spooky with spider webs and potions and etc. It had a dark theme to it and most of the color in it was dark purple and grey and blue. The moon on the cover I believe had a face to it but the face was mean or spooky. If anyone knows what this book is please let me know.

Hi, I’m looking for a children’s book that I don’t remember the name of or the author. Hi! I am looking for a children’s picture book that I recall from around 1995. It had very few words and was one of those that was more visually telling a story. There was a jungle with a tiger in it and the book began very very dark but as you turned the pages it got brighter and lighter as sunrise approached. You could see more and more clearly the tiger, but there was also peril: a young elephant was approaching the tiger and would be eaten! There’s a surprise at the end but I can’t remember what it is. I believe something happens to keep the tiger from eating the elephant- perhaps it gets bright enough that the elephant sees him?? It was a beautiful book and I’d love to track it down. It was hardcover but no more than 20 pages or so and large, like 8×10 landscape orientation. Help!!

Hello, I’m looking for a children’s picture book that I think was dealing with topics like death and bullying, something like that. I remember the book had lots of animals and I kind of remember the main character being a brown hedgehog/porcupine like character. The one picture I remember from the book was the hedgehog/porcupine with his hands in his pockets kicking a can in a barren landscape, just maybe close to or next to a grave; and I also remember a photo of the character in a bus or car looking a bit upset. I remember reading this book in the early 2000’s.
