I’m looking for a children’s book that I used to get out of the library in the 1970’s. It had the word Curlew in the title. I’m sure that it was a period story. All I know is that I loved it so much that I read it many times. I was around eight years old at the time so that’s probably why I don’t remember the full title! Many thanks.

There’s also The Berenstain Bears’ Christmas Tree by Stan and Jan Berenstain.

Papa Bear is determined to cut down the perfect Christmas tree, because none of the trees in the lot are good enough – but when he and the cubs go out into the woods to look for the perfect trees, all the trees are already occupied by a variety of woodland critters, and they don’t want to leave them homeless. Papa and the cubs come home empty-handed – only to discover that all the critters have returned the kindness by decorating the bears entire tree/house.

Maybe take a look at The Bears Merry Christmas by Carol North (also published as The Christmas Tree Book). It’s about the bear family getting ready for Christmas – but they go to a lot and buy the tree rather than cutting it down. They bring the tree home, cut the trunk so it fits in the stand, water it to keep it moist, hang lights, make paper chains, and hang the decorations.

Hi, I’m looking for a children’s book about this little girl who wanted to go fishing with her father and brothers but was not allowed to cuz she was a girl, but she was determined and snuck on. I read this around 2007-2009 and cannot find it anywhere.

Here are two possibilities, though neither seems perfect. Both are longer than the length you indicated

The first is The Unicorn Sonata (1996) by Peter S. Beagle, illustrated by Robert Rodríguez. Here’s a video with some of the illustrations: https://youtu.be/f2Sq3K4mRBA?t=195

The second is Save the Unicorns (1989) by Shelagh Jones. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3523422-save-the-unicorns

I’m looking for a hardcover picture book I loved as a little girl in the 1980s. It was about a group of sisters that raised themselves (I can’t remember why there were no parents present!?). They each had different jobs (one did the gardening, one was in charge of cooking, etc.) I think the cover was yellow and there were pretty pictures of meadows and flowers. I would love to read it to my little girls now but I can’t remember the title! Does this ring any bells?

I’m looking for a set of books about a teddy bear. There were about 10 in the series. One of the stories is about teddy buying a farm and buying toy figures to go in it, including a rosy cheeked farmer’s wife. I think the stories were set in the West Country because one of them mentions a cream tea. The books were published before the 2nd world war.

I am looking for a children’s or YA book that was a portal fantasy about a child escaping down a staircase into a new world. They get lost in the unpleasant underground space. It is not Gregor the Overlander. Possible female main character. I remember it being a bit unsettling to read. I feel like the main character escaped down a staircase in a home belonging to a mean woman or women that she perhaps had to work for?

There’s The Little Brute Family by Russell and Lillian Hoban.

They eat sand and gravel for breakfast and a stew of sticks and stones for dinner. No one says “please” or “thank you.” Instead, they kick and yell and punch and shove. Then one day everything changes, when Baby Brute happens upon “a little wandering lost good feeling in a field of daisies.”

I read (and reread) a book back in the 70s, from my school’s library. The only thing I remember was that the author’s last name started with an A (I think, based on where I found it, on the shelves). It was about a young girl who rode her horse through a mountain pass (Rockies, I think) and into a magical valley. I wish I could find this book again. It was old, even back then. Thank you for any help you could provide.

I’m looking for a picture book that I read when I was a child. It always made me so happy reading it. It’s about a little girl (African American I think) who wanted to have a playdate with her friends. I remember she put so much effort into everything; cutting the sandwiches into stars, (making lemonade, strawberries ??) I’m not 100% sure about the food. But I do know that it started raining, and so she had to reschedule. Or go inside and do soemthing else. I’m sorry I don’t remember much about it, but I’ve been looking for this book for a long time. I’ll know it if I see it.

Looking for a children’s book I read in around 2010 although the publication date could be as early as 85’. It was about a young girl and boy running around trying to save the unicorns. It was set in a city of some type. And the illustrations were very pretty, each page had a signature from the illustrator. The book was hardcover and about twice the width of a traditional paper back. I remember one scene of the boy and girl herding the unicorns through a massive wrought iron gate to a park. It was not a very long book 40 pages at most, mostly pictures.

I am looking for a book that my parents read to me in the 80s and probably was from the 70s. It was a picture book and the only thing I remember about it was that spring was coming. I think it talked about pussy willows and the picture showed little kitten faces on the pussy willow buds. More specifically I remember robins calling each other by using daffodils as old fashioned telephones, to announce that spring was coming.
I love the visual of the robins calling on daffodils and I wish I could remember what that book was.

Take a look at some of Nicola Baxter’s books.

Two-Minute Bunny Tales by Nicola Baxter starts with a story called The Rainbow Rabbits (about a would-be inventor rabbit who develops a system to tell his children apart by color-coding all their clothing: one in red, one in blue, one in green, etc. – until a laundry mishap leaves the whole family with multi-colored clothes) and ends with a poem called Belinda’s Bedtime (about Belinda Bunny who does not want to go to bed – scroll down for complete text).

While Two-Minute Bunny Tales does not include dog or cat stories, perhaps some of the stories or poems are repeated in other books? Nicola Baxter also has books with Kitten Tales (Two Minute Kitten Tales, Five Minute Kitten Tales) and Puppy Tales (Two Minute Puppy Tales, The Puppy Tales Collection) – and a lot of other books of poems and stories.

Belinda’s Bedtime

When it was time to go to bed,
Belinda Bunny always said,
“I’m just not ready yet to go.
I’m not a baby now you know!”

One night her mother counted ten
And sat down in her chair again.
“This fuss is more than I can take.
All right, Belinda, stay awake!”

This was a very big surprise!
Belinda yawned and rubbed her eyes.
Now that her mum had let her stay,
She really felt too tired to play.

A minute passed – it seemed like ten!
Belinda’s voice was heard again.
“I think it’s time to go to bed,
I’m only little still,” she said.

I’m trying to recall the title of a couple books that were part of a series of children’s novels. I read it in the late 90’s or early 2000’s. They’re about a boy, who refers to himself as “wired” or possibly “wired differently”, and I think it is implied he has ADHD.

I recall one book where he spends the summer with his father and grandmother. His grandmother is mean, maybe foul mouthed, and he buys her smokes I believe?

In a separate book he is in school and living with his mother. I think he is trying to be friends with a neighborhood boy but its not going smoothly for some set of reasons.

Unfortunately that’s all I can recall right now. And it’s pretty fuzzy, so I can’t guarantee the above is all correct…

I’m looking for a book I read as a child, that I think may have been the first I ever read of my own volition. It was a UK publication, though not sure if it would have been available elsewhere.

In my head it was called ‘The Wof’, though I’ve never found anything bearing that title after many fruitless searches.

The premise from what I can remember was that a kid or two finds/meets a tiny character called the Wof and take him to school. The Wof, or whatever it is/was, can fit in their pockets. He either has a love or an aversion to salt.

The book itself was around 63 pages long.

I read this around 1985 (at around six years old), but it may well have been around a bit longer, such is the longevity of books in school libraries.

I got a book from the library when I was very young, probably no more than 7. All I can remember is that it had really beautiful detailed illustrations in full color and that it was about a girl trying to rescue a boy (don’t know if they were related or friends or a couple). She had to go on a big quest to find him and along the way an ant gave her one of his antenna. If she put it under her tongue she could become small to help her get past some obstacle. An eagle also gave her a feather that allowed her to fly. I have a memory of an illustration of the girl crouching on a red rock cliffside or something. She had darker skin, so perhaps it was a Native legend? It was very epic. It’s stuck in my head for 40 years and I can’t seem to find it anywhere or even get a hint of what the title might be!

I’m trying to find a book that was one of those giant, oversized books (like 2ft+ tall) that librarians could read to the whole group at storytime. I remember reading it in the mid 90s, but the actual book could have been older than that. The book was soft cover, about a doll that wanted to be purchased/find a friend in a toy store. The book had a red/orange/yellow solid color border and the doll picture was a brunette porcelain-looking doll. The doll had a friend with blonde hair that was purchased before her. It may have been set at Christmas time, but I am not certain about that part. Thanks for the help!

this book has been nagging at the back of my brain for a while and i can’t find any answers. it’s an illustrated somewhat-short book about this girl looking for her little brother who was taken by some evil dude or something, she receives a package with some magic thing (and her neighbor dies but i think that’s irrelevant) and goes to this wonderland-esque place with talking flowers, a super tall staircase, and i *think* there was also a talking bed but idk, i read this book back in the early 2000s, so i’m guessing it came out somewhere between 1999 and 2010. also, the cover was a blueish-teal-green and the title was one word. it may have started with an E, i don’t know. anyone have any ideas?? thank you!!

McBroom’s Zoo by Sid Fleischman.

After a tornado carries off all the topsoil from McBroom’s wonderful one-acre farm, he collects a variety of peculiar creatures that the twister had left behind and starts his own zoo, charging people to see the creatures – and using the money to have the topsoil transported back to his farm from the spot where the tornado had dropped it. Along the way, they must also fend off a hunter who wants to shoot the strange creatures so he can have them stuffed and mounted on his wall. Once McBroom and his wife and children (Will Jill Hester Chester Peter Polly Tim Tom Mary Larry and little Clarinda) have raised the necessary money, they drive out to a remote section of the prairie to release all the animals.

Among the animals in the zoo:

The Sidehill Gouger: an animal like a small mountain goat, with the tail and ears of a large jackrabbit. The legs on one side are long and the legs on the other side are short, so it can stand upright on the side of a steep hill.

The Desert Vamooser: a catfish that dislikes water and swims through the dust backward (tail first) to keep the dust out of its eyes.

A flock of Galoopus Birds: birds that look like sage hens, but nest on the steepest parts of the hill – and lay square eggs, so they won’t roll downhill.

…and of course, the Great Seventeen-toed Prairie Hidebehind, which almost no-one has ever seen because it’s always hiding behind something. It could be following you on its tiptoes, but every time you spun around to look, it would still be behind you. Not that anyone actually saw the hidebehind, of course. All they ever saw was its footprints – until the very end, when McBroom explains that he was finally able to see it when he accidentally sat on a porcupine, having mistaken it for a small stump – and of course, immediately leapt up and spun around quick!

I’m looking for a late 1970s or early 1980s children’s book that contained a collection of classic-ish (possibly all public domain) stories, and each story/chapter was printed on a different colored group of pages. One story was on pink pages, the next on green, the next on orange, etc. It was a thick paperback book, and the pages almost had a rough texture to them. If I remember correctly, there were some illustrations, buy they were just simple black print, like the text. It was probably a very cheap and low quality book, but my grandma used to read me stories out of it, and I wish I could find a copy.

Zeralda’s Ogre by Tomi Ungerer

“The giant appetite of the ogre could only be satisfied by the flesh of children until young Zeralda tamed his taste buds with her culinary art.”

“A lonely old ogre who likes to eat children commits terrible depredations on the surrounding human settlements in this picture-book from Tomi Ungerer, forcing people to hide their young. The ogre, now finding it difficult to locate his favorite food, becomes ever more hungry, and ever more grumpy. Enter Zeralda, a young cook and gourmand living with her farmer father far from any town. When Zeralda runs into the ogre on her way to market, her compassion for the hungry creature, passed out after a surprise dive onto her cart, leads her to cook him a delicious meal. This, in turn, leads to her eventual role as his cook, and his renunciation of child-devouring. So complete is Zeralda’s reform of her ogre, that when she grows into a beautiful woman, they get married and have children.”

This is a long shot, but could it be one of the Frances books by Russell Hoban? She was a badger, apparently, but I could see that getting mixed up in long-term memory. The books came out in the 60s but I remember reading them in the early 2000s.

I’ve been thinking about this picture book I read in the 2000s for like 15 years now- it was about goblins (?) or gremlins of some kind that were having a birthday party. I remember that the pages were mostly black (I guess the party was in the dark), but with very colorful illustrations of the creatures and the birthday cakes and all that.

EDIT: I found a read-through that was posted this year and it was The Goblin’s Birthday Party by Erica Farber, a Mercer Mayer book. It didn’t look how I remembered it, but I do think that was it.

Hi! Like everyone else, I’m trying to find a book. I read it ~2006 but my mom said she used to read the book when she was growing up. So that puts it in the 1980’s, possibly earlier. It’s a fairly short chapter book in the form of journal entrys about a dog, from puppyhood to when hes quite old. It skips in the years a couple of times, but stays in chronological order. You very briefly meet his dog family, but that’s right before he finds his forever family. I distinctly remember one part, I believe it’s the puppies first night with his new forever family, but the puppy (male) describes how the mom puts a clock under a blanket for him to sleep on so he fall asleep faster since it sounded like his dog moms/siblings heartbeat(s). It was a well loved book, but unfortanately by the time I got the book, it had already ripped down the center, but from what I remember, it was a soft cover, light blue book, and I want to say the dog was a golden retriever puppy maybe? Appreciate any suggestions 🙂

I am trying to find two books from the early-mid 1970s and I believe they were Scholastic books. One was about dirt track stock car racing, which I have been thinking was Dirt Track Summer but that doesn’t seem to be it. The second was about two guys who started racing dirt bikes. They started out not liking each other much but ended up as friends. I jus remember one chapter the manufacturer they were driving didn’t want to supply them with bikes and one of the boys said, “Then we’ll buy a pair of Harleys and go beat them.” I’ve been trying to find a few books from when I was a kid. I’ve found the great Johnny-Bingo and a nice hard cover of The Raft. Now I want to find these two. Any ideas?

If it might have been a little man, take a look at The Amazing Adventures of Chilly Billy by Peter Mayle.

“Once you’ve met Chilly Billy and heard of his adventures inside the refrigerator, you’ll never open the fridge door in quite the same way again. Chilly Billy is a fun and lovable character with adventures like the Fridge Olympics and the Frozen sports contest against his arch rival The Mad Jumper. Seven short chapters geared to children under ten.”

Don’t know anything about magic carpets, but it somewhat reminds me of the poem “The Land of Counterpane” by Robert Louis Stevenson. There are probably numerous books with that poem in them.

The King’s Equal by Katherine Paterson.

On his deathbed, the wise old king decrees that his arrogant son will not inherit the crown until he marries “a woman who is your equal in beauty and intelligence and wealth.” Angry, and misunderstanding this “blessing,” Prince Raphael sets about impoverishing his people and rejecting a procession of princesses who may excel in one quality, but never in three. In the meantime, Rosamund, a shepherd lass, shares the last of her grain with a hungry (but gentle) wolf; magically, his presence replenishes the grain and he recognizes her as queen-to-be. He sends her to the palace, where her wisdom and compassion charm Raphael. Still, he must now prove himself to her: leaving Rosamund to put his kingdom to rights, he repairs to her hut, where the animals help him learn cooperation, competence, and humility.

And from an online review: “I loved The King’s Equal because of its magical moments. For instance, when Rosamund said that there was no more grain to make bread with, the wolf said there was and there was enough to last them the whole year.

Just because of the square eggs, maybe take a look at The Gillygoofang by George Mendoza, illustrated by Mercer Mayer.

“The gillygoofang is a fish with the face of a toothy Jim Backus. It bewilders all the trout in the brook not because it swims backward to keep the water out of its eyes but because it changes colors to trick the bigger fish; it bewilders all the fishermen in the brook not because it swims backward. . . or changes colors. . . but because it whistles to warn the little fish. The gillygoofang bewilders the gillygaloo, a bird which lays square eggs so they can’t roll downhill, not because. . . or. . . or. . . but because it lays square eggs too. After seven similarly surprising (but not equally sensible), constantly cumulating feats, the gillygoofang finally bewilders itself: caught at the edge of a waterfall, it has to swim forward to get back into the brook.”

“The Gillygoofang is a strange fish that manages to bewilder every other strange creature in the brook – the big and small fish, the fisherman, the hoopsnake, the bat, the bird that lays square eggs, etc – the book reads much like “The House that Jack Built” but is exponentially more entertaining. Can you guess how the Gillygoofang might bewilder himself?”

I am trying to find a book I read when I was young. I read it in the early to mid-80’s when I was in late grade school or so. I think it was a chapter book. The main character was a boy. I think the cover had a backyard/garden (was green, anyway – if I recall correctly). I think it was in the summer and the boy had to go to his grandfather’s house (or maybe it was just an older neighbor). The older person had him go out in the yard or maybe a garden. The older person had made a grid of the backyard/garden and would send the boy out to sit in each square for quite some time and write about or at least observe what he saw and experienced. The boy was amazed at how much happened in each area and how interesting it was (although, at first he thought it really dull).

It was probably a Scholastic or library book. Thanks for any help anyone is able to provide!!

Thinking of an old children’s book. It’s about this man who’s looking for like crypto da or weird animals. There’s a bird that lays I think square eggs in the side of a hill. Then a catfish that swims in dust and a jack slope with long hind legs. As well as a monster that’s always behind you but you can’t see it unless you turn around soooooo fast.

Okay. I’ve been searching for this children’s book for literally over 15 years. I was probably about 10 years old when I visited the Orem Library (Utah) 1993 ish. The librarian gave me this book telling me that I would probably love it. I read it, loved it, and that’s what got me started in my love of reading! I have since tried to find it with absolutely no luck. Here I will dedicate a post in the hopes that someone, somewhere will know what I am talking about. Here are the few details I know about the plot.
-Main character is a young girl.
-Girl goes to live with her aunts (might be good friends of parents and not relatives)
-Things seem normal except the girl is forbidden to read from a certain book the aunts have.
-One day the aunts get kidnapped and the girl must go into another world to find them.
-The girl has a companion that is a little dwarf, gnome, or other weird creature.
-As the girl progresses in her journey she learns new spells that help her progress.
-At one point the girl must get a new guide given to her by the bad guy (maybe) but she knows a spell that forces her old companion to tell the truth if the new guy is trustworthy so she gets a different one.
I know these details are really random but perhaps a random google search will get some stranger’s attention and they can help out

I am looking for an ABCs book from the 90’s. It came with a cassette tape that sang along as you read through in this sort of hiphop vibe song. I remember “T is for Top” “O is for Orange” but mainly “N is for nest. Its home for little birdies on the go, they need a rest.” The cover was a shade of green with small pink polka dots and it centered around a blonde boy and girl. The illustrations were really nice and vibrant.

Hello! I’m looking for an older children’s book (probably 80s or 90s). The illustrations were beautiful. I want to say a father sent his daughter to live in the snowy cabin by herself. A wolf would come to her and ask to share a meal with her. She says something along the lines of “I would love to, however the grain bin is empty.” But the wolf can somehow enchant there to be more grain. The girl makes bread for her and the wolf to share. I specifically remember two illustrations: one that has a king dying with all his nobleman around, and the second is the girl baking bread while the wolf sits at the table eager for her to finish. I used to love this book as a child and would love to share it with my son now. Thank you so much!

Okay, this will sound WEIRD. But back in elementary, I somewhat read the beginning of a book in which a boy with spikes coming out of his body and the main protagonist goes into those woods. I’ve been looking EVERYWHERE. Any ideas here?

This book likely came out in the 90s.

There was a book with a tiny creature (maybe a dinosaur) that was living in a refrigerator/freezer. On each page, there were illustrations of the character going through the jungle (in a salad) or maybe skiing (in the freezer). On the final page, it was revealed that the book was taking place inside of a refrigerator with the backdrops being different meals. I can’t remember much else but was hoping someone might know what I am talking about. Thank you!

Hi I’m hurting trying to find a book I used to read as a kid late 80s / early – mid 90s.

It’s about, if my memory is correct, a little boy who is in bed and gets under his covers imagining his bed is something different, or in a different environment.. Like a magic carpet on the desert etc

Anyone recognise it?

Looking for an older childrens book about colors. It started in a land without color, then through a crystal colors began to appear. Each page featured a different color with a hole peeking to the next color on the next page. The end had the whole rainbow. One page was indigo.

This idea is used in the story “Vegetables” in the book Lionel at Large, by Stephen Krensky. I saw a reference to the story being included in a basal reader (title unknown), which might account for the phrase showing up in different places online (“the babysitter told him he had a vegetable shelf,” etc.), if it was used in a lot of schools.

There was a library book I read in the mid 80’s about a young girl that was taken in by a family. I think the family was Ukrainian as they went to a festival and the family gave her a pair of red boots and a special traditional outfit that included seven layers of skirts. Other then that I can only remember the description of rolling green hills.

No kidding, I’ve been trying to figure out the name of this same book for weeks! I just spent a couple hours scouring sites that offer vintage Scholastic and Apple books for sale, although I can’t remember if the book was published by either of them. A couple more things I think I remember from this book (tell me if any of this sounds familiar): one of the kids keeps hearing noises from the floor above the floor on which she is staying; at some point she finds a key or a locket or a necklace on the floor of her room; the name Marsden (maybe the surname of the family or the name of the hotel/inn). If you manage to figure out this mystery, please post here and I will do the same!

Not sure when the book is from (maybe the 90s or 00s), but it’s about an asian girl (I think chinese) celebrating a festival (I think Chinese New Year). She’s a bit of a brat and gets in trouble when she gets red dye all over her clothes.

Hello, I’m looking for a book about a young girl who flies away from her family in a plane. She flies in her plane to an island of, I believe, hippos who make her their queen. They give her a heavy crown and the previous princess gives her a list of all the rules she must follow as the princess. After a few days the girl grows tired of being the princess and decides to take off her crown and leave the hippos with their old princess.
I believe the cover of the book is a picture of the girl wearing the crown on her head.

I read this book in maybe 1991 or 1992, so I would have been 5 or 6. Not sure what the title is, but its about a boy who gets swooped up from his backyard by a family of geese who turn him into one of their flock. Then they drop him back off at home. Later on he’s at school recess and when he waves to the geese they don’t remember him.

I feel like there are some plot holes in my memory of the story, but all I know is I cried super hard at the end.

Hello. I’m looking for a picture book about a young girl that likes to wear very fancy dresses and have her hair curled just right. Her father takes her on a trip to the beach to go fishing and she spends the whole time being worried about getting dirty. Eventually she learns to have fun in the mud and in the end goes back with her dad but in a set of waders.
