A book that I really enjoyed but I haven’t been able to figure out the name or author. It was about a young boy who went grocery shopping with his mother but got split up. He wanders around lost, and eventually finds another child who is also separated from his parents. They have misadventure, including building a hidden fortress out of canned goods. I think I remember in one of the illustrations, there is a signboard advertising a product: “DOOF: It’s ‘Food’ backwards!

Hello Henry, by Ilse Margaret Vogel. If you do an image search, one of the illustrations shows the “Doof” sign.

I’m looking for a book that may very well be out of print that I read and loved when I was a little girl in the mid 1960’s. It was about a mommy camel and her child (I think a boy camel) and a special necklace she gave him to wear around his neck. He became lost in the desert and spent most of the book searching for his mommy. He learned many lessons along the way and finally found her at the end. I believe the necklace had significance, maybe to keep reminding him of her. I have looked everywhere for this beautiful children’s picture book but cannot find it. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

I think you are looking for The Youngest Camel by Kay Boyle. Here is the Gutenberg text of the first edition. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/64988/64988-h/64988-h.htm
I also loved this as a child, but you may have had the revised edition which was less scarey and was illustrated by Ronni Solbert, not Fritz Kredel.

Oh my goodness! Yes! This is the book I have been searching for all my adult life!!!! Thank you so much. It must have been a first edition because I remember that the cover and illustrations were very simple with some aqua and cream colors. No red cover as I now see in many of the later editions. The magic necklace and the reuniting of the son with the mother have stayed with me all these years. Thank you so much for helping me find this book! Amazing!

Looking for a children’s book, about horses. It was a collection of short horse stories. I read it sometime between 2010-2018 but the book was a lot older. I would guess it was published 60s or 70s? Some of the short stories went like this. One was about a rider that warned a small village of an army that would come and kill them. The village hid inside a mud wall for 3 days while the army destroyed their village and crops. Another was about a servant/slave boy who escaped from his master with a donkey (I think) I don’t remember much but there was one about a pack of wild horses, one about a cold winter where this young girl’s family died and her and her father changed to another village group thing. It might have been the same story but there was also one about a foal after it’s mother got shot for her meat and then a girl looks after it.

I’m looking for a children’s book from the 70’s or so about some farm animals. I mostly remember a pig and also a cow that would say, “When I’m calling moo-ooo-ooo.” They tried to build a swimming pool out of bricks and another time the cow wanted to jump over the moon so the animals tried to lasso it down for her.

I grew up in the 90’s, and my favorite book to get from the library was something like “more rutabagas” or something? I can not for the life of me remember what it was called. It was a multi story book with the coolest illustrations. Any help or ideas are very much appreciated!!!

I’m looking for a book I would have read as a child in the 90s. It was about a bunch of animal friends training for a race. The main character was a rabbit who turned down all his friends whenever they wanted to practice with him, and always said ‘I’ll do it tomorrow.’ When the day of the race comes he gets last place. My mom and I quote this book constantly and I’d love to find a copy to show her.

I have one or two pages of what’s left of a children’s book that belonged to my family growing up in the 1950’s and 1960’s. I’m hoping beyond all hope that a very experienced person with a keen eye might be able to identify the book these pages came from and, if so, how I might be able to locate a complete copy.

The pages are actually stiff, thick board – like “Pat the Bunny.” Each page has a cut out that you could peak through to see an image on the next page. The theme of the book, as best as I can remember, was “transportation.” Each page had a different theme; one page depicted a train station, another a bustling city with cars and trucks, another a farm with a tractor, another a lakeside scene with a speed boat, etc., and the cutout was in the shape of an image coming up on the next page.

I’m attaching a few scans of what is left of the book. I would GREATLY appreciate any help you can offer, including referrals to other experts and resources that might be able to identify the book.

Thank you very much. 🙂comment imagecomment image

Were you supposed to put puzzle pieces in the cut out areas? It’s the same shape in both pics. One says “a porter’s truck,” and I was wondering if that’s what goes there. Was the book a square shape?

No – my kids had similar books. When you’re reading it, the cutout on the page lines up with an image on the next page. The reason it’s the same shape in both pics (but reversed) is that you are seeing front and back of the same page.

in the 70’s, alfred hitchcock had some large hard-cover anthologies of creepy stories for children. i’ve been trying to track down which volume had this story in it but can’t seem to find it. i remember the story being about a boy visiting his relatives who live next to a marsh (grandparents, maybe?) he sees a light bobbing around in the swamp at night & thinks it’s a will o’the wisp hiding treasure so he finally gets over his fear one night & goes out to track it. it turns out it is his grandmother secretly going to visit her adult son who has been disinherited by his father & is living in a shack out there. does that seem right?

Parts of it sound right. I’ve a feeling it may have been adapted from that story. It was a real Willo the wisp he sees, not his grandmother, and I’m sure it tried to lure him into a bog or swamp.

I remember liking the story so much that I copied it down as a kid. I wish I could remember more about it.

I’m looking for an Australian paper back, children’s book from the mid 90s which was about two sisters and their parents going to a family bbq in the evening. The book shows the girls travelling in the back seat of the family’s car, with the eski and food items between them. The kids spin in circles at the bbq with the other children, and fall on the ground dizzy. The sun sets, and the family heads home with the children falling asleep in the back of the car. The pictures had a kind of plasticine realism. I would really appreciate any hints of help! It’s a special book that I read at my grandma’s house, but have not been able to locate in my adulthood!

I’m looking for a book I saw on reading rainbow. It’s about a little girl who does an experiment for a school project which involves attaching helium balloons to planter boxes and sending them off into space to see if they grow better some how. Soon afterwards giant fruits and vegetables begin falling from the sky all over the earth. In one scene the big apple is renamed the big turnip, or something like that, and in another the a giant piece of broccoli lands in the main girl’s backyard and eventually is made into a treehouse. At the end it’s revealed that the giant food was not caused by the girl’s experiment but by some aliens that were passing by the planet and one of them accidentally causes their giant food to fall to the earth and, coincidentally, the girl’s floating gardens will make perfect replacements because they’re the only things available.

I am looking for a children’s book I had in the early 80’s. It was illustrated beautifully in light colours. There is a character (someone’s father I think) with a car covered in doll heads/toys/action figures. The main character is a preteen girl, who liked the car as a kid but now is embarrassed by it. At some point either the man or some other kids cut the heads off of the car. Not sure what the main plot was, but I think there’s maybe a subplot with the man trying to date someone? Hi- I’m looking for a childrens book I read in the 90’s. It was not sleeping beauty. The cover had a sleeping girl surrounded by animals and her golden hair. Below is what I can remember of the story.

A woodsman or hunter lived with his wife, daughter, and housekeeper in the forest. The housekeeper poisoned the wife’s soup with mushrooms. The father didn’t know that and married the housekeeper. For some reason the daughter runs away and falls asleep on a stone alter type thing and, while she slept, all the animals combed her hair with a golden comb until it grew and grew and covered her whole body. Some how the curse is broken, the woodman is actually the king, the daughter a princess, all the animals were the subjects, and the housekeeper was a witch. The witch turns into a beautiful blue and green bird and lives in a golden cage at the castle. She can leave anytime because the door of the cage is open but she doesn’t fly away.

There are a LOT of books that could fit that description… but maybe take a look at The Wump World by Bill Peet?

“The Wumps live in a lovely world of grassy meadows and leafy green trees until they are invaded by potbellied monsters known as Pollutians who bulldoze everything to build their city. But the Pollutians soon exhaust the resources of this planet (as they did with their last one) and move on. The Wumps return, horrified by the destruction they see, but become hopeful when they find a small patch of grass and begin to restore their home.”

In the 80s or 90s (we read it around ages 4-8 in the mid nineties) but I believe it was a board book, could have not been, but it was about a kitty and each page was the kitten getting into something curious & each page read “No No Kitty, that’s hot” when he was on the counter nearing the stove, etc etc. Very short young toddler/childrens book but each page had No No Kitty that’s _____. It was my little sisters most favorite book & as an adult I’ve tried to find it so hard to give her as a gift to put a smile on her face ever since she was diagnosed with cancer. Google & amazon always comes up with another book called “no no kitten” but that’s not the correct book. Please please if anyone else remembers this I would be eternally grateful! . Hello! I have spent years looking for this one: it was a children storybook with funny and beautiful illustrations about a creature whose parents were killed by hunters. At first the creature looks like a green worm but the rest of the animals don’t know what kind of creature it is. They give a red ribbon and a leaf to the creature and it uses the leaf as a boat to go down the river. The next spring the animals go looking for the creature and they discover that it has grown and it is in fact a huge green snake. The snake goes to meet them rolling down the hill like a hoop (biting its own tail), still wearing the red ribbon, and they all remain friends. My mother used to read this book to me around 1995, in Spanish, but I suspect it was a translation. This story was very dear to me, so every help would be appreciated.

The entire book has thick green and white stripes covering the entire book. The name Free To Be You And Me is stuck my Head but I do not think that is it. That sounds like The Light Princess by George Macdonald.

“A king and queen, after some time, have a daughter. The king invites everyone to the christening, except his sister Princess Makemnoit, a spiteful and sour woman. She arrives without an invitation and curses the princess to have no gravity. Whenever the princess accidentally moves up in the air, she has to be brought down, and the wind is capable of carrying her off… She passionately loves swimming, and when she swims, she regains her gravity….”

“A prince from another country sets out to find a wife but finds fault in every princess he finds. He had not intended to seek out the light princess, but, upon becoming lost in a forest, he finds the princess swimming. Thinking she is drowning, he rescues her, ending up with her in the air, with her scolding him. He falls instantly in love and, upon her demand, puts her back in the water, and goes swimming with her. Days pass and the prince learns that her manner is changed between the water and the land, and he can not marry her as she is on land.”

Mess Pets by Jill McElmurry

Hannah and Hilary are identical red-headed twins who share a bedroom, feuding because Hannah is neat and organized and Hilary is hopelessly messy and downright dirty, with heaps of junk on her side of the room that include pizza crusts and dirty socks. The trash piles mysteriously produce two unusual pets, a dog-like imaginary creature named Mr. Peel for Hilary and an extra-long-tailed cat named Tip-Top for Hannah. In the strongest part of the story, the girls and their “mess pets” descend into the underworld that exists beneath messy rooms, with several humorous spreads showing map-like illustrations of fantastical formations such as Hairy Hairbrush Lane, Spilled Milk Lagoon, and Dust Bunny Mountain (complete with sneezing rabbits). When Hannah and Hilary hear their own arguments replayed by their bickering pets, they realize that compromise is in order, and a group rapprochement is achieved with a wallow in a huge banana split.

I’m looking for a YA book about a girl who goes from homeschooling to a regular school. I think her and her parents are both “weird” and the only scene I really remember is them being inside of Goodwill because she is trying to change her style. I remember the cover very well though: its bright green, with a girl wearing a sundress with flowers and then silver snow boots, and I think her head is cut out of frame. I’m almost positive it was written in the mid-2000s and that the main character has an unusual name.

Hi Im looking for a book that I grew up with in the 1950’s that was rather large with a lot of short stories and one was about a train. Not the little engine that could. The quoted line was “Steady steady till you’re ready, learn to know before you go”. I located it years ago on Google but never wrote it down now I can’t find it. I have grand children that I would love to share this with.

Hello! I’m looking for a children’s picture book, that featured a red headed man in a pink suit. It has him climbing a ladder and eating a strawberry, and other mundane things of the sort. I believe it’s from the 60’s or 70’s, as it my mother was gifted a first edition as a young child. I know this isn’t much to go one, but I’m asking where I can, in case anyone has a clue what I’m talking about.

I read a book as a kid (in the 90’s or maybe very early 2000’s) that was about a girl who’s father committed suicide and she becomes close with a male cousin, who’s mother mysteriously vanished. Sounds dark for a kids book I know! There is a whole side plot about the girl never cutting her hair because her father asked her mom never to cut it, but then she has a cathartic moment of hacking it all off with scissors. Also it’s revealed the boy cousin new all along that his mom had run off to join a circus that was passing through town. He checks the newspaper personal ads everyday to look for a coded message from his mom, since they used to joke about that, but he says he new deep down he wouldn’t ever find anything.

I remember so much of this book but NOT the title and google has been no help!

Looking for a children’s/young adult book, protagonist is a boy whose school bans shirts with words on them so he and the students create a protest by all wearing shirts that have words. His bully moves next door to him at some point in the book as well, and he ends up having to stay the night or weekend at the bullies house, I remember the bedroom being western themed. There’s also a point where his teacher ends up in the hospital and the substitute takes 2 kids a weekend to visit him, I believe it was strongly implied the teacher had tried to commit suicide by driving into a tree.

Hi there, I am looking for a children’s book that has bothered me for years. It’s a short chapter book. It’s about a child that moves into am old lighthouse with their family. They befriend a boy in the house and through the course of the book you learn the boy is a ghost. Cover had a picture of a room with a boy standing in the corner facing you. He had his fingers in an “o” or an “ok” symbol held up to his eye. In the background of the room was a window and the window had a story ship scene. I would have read this around 2006 or 2007. This was a standalone book and was not a book in a series
Thank you!

That sounds like Luno, the Soaring Stallion by Jean Bethell (1964).

A little boy (Tim) has a little white statue of a winged horse (Luno) on his bookcase. One day, when he was supposed to be sweeping his room, he waved the broomstick over the statue and said “Oh winged horse of marble white, take me on a magic flight!” The statue began to grow and grow, until it was the size of a real horse – and came to life. It flapped its wings and said to Tim, “Climb on my back, master! We’re going to have an adventure!”

Hi! I’m looking for a kids book from the early 2000s that was a catch the thief search and find picture book with few words I believe, and the thief left behind clues and you could see them fleeing the page, but only a foot/leg/hand/arm at a time, and you finally caught them at the end. It was kind of like a puzzle or maze, and at the very back of the book it had little pictures of all the mazes solved. It was a hard cover, purple book I think, and some of the scenes where an old timey opera stage and a museum.

Any help is greatly appreciated! This has been driving me crazy for years.

These might be a little too recent – but perhaps one of the Pierre the Maze Detective books by Hiro Kamigaki (Illustrator) and Chihiro Maruyama (Writer)?

For example: Pierre the Maze Detective: The Search for the Stolen Maze Stone.

“Pierre the Maze Detective has a new case. Mr X has stolen the Maze Stone, which has the power to turn the whole of Opera City into a maze. Can you help Pierre and his friend Carmen find their way through the mazes – and stop Mr X before it’s too late? This beautifully illustrated book features 15 full-spread illustrations of intricate, magical mazes. Take a trip through a fantastic world of underground cities, hot-air balloons, tree-top towns and haunted houses. Trace your way through each maze, spot the clues and solve the extra mystery challenges along the way. Hours of puzzle fun, for all maze detectives aged 8+. A page of answers with the routes through the mazes and other solutions is included at the end of the book.”

Can you clarify what you’re looking for? Are you looking for a single book that contains *just* those two stories? An anthology of fairy tales that includes both of those stories, plus others? Or a set of books with that includes those two stories as separate volumes?

Approximately how old is the book you are looking for? Do you remember anything about the illustrations or style of the book? Was it hard cover or soft? How big was the book?

Looking for a childrens/YA fiction novel, not sure when it might have been written. About a boy who has moved to a new town with his father (who might have been a minister?). I vividly remember him taking piano lessons with/visiting an elderly lady who was notorious across town for obsessing over her death and last words. She had a passionate dislike for Psalms 23 (“the lord is my shepherd”) and would practice giving long monologues whenever she thought she was dying, asking the boy to write it down to relate at her funeral. After one of these monologues, she asks the boy to go get her a beer, and then dies. At her funeral, everyone is waiting to hear her last words, but when the boy’s father learns what they were, he reads Psalms 23 instead. I remember the story having a “Because of Winn-Dixie” feel to it, if that helps.

“Egbert is a small wooden duck on wheels. His owner, Sebastian, ties him to the back of his father’s car one morning. He ends up on a desert island with a French poet before being sent home.”

“Young Sebastian Willowfrost loves playing with Egbert, his wooden duck pull-toy. So how does Egbert end up hurtling down Route 95 at 60 m.p.h….flying over a cliff into a stream… only to arrive on a desert island inhabited by a marooned French poet? Will Sebastian ever again see his favorite toy?”

Hello,
I am looking for a book about a girl and her friend (the girl’s the main character) who want to be detectives? or something and hears story’s about there being a ghost in a hotel that is not running. I read it a few years ago so my memory is kinda fuzzy and I might be mixing in things from other books. I think the book title was in Spanish or had Spanish in it. The girl’s dad owned a restaurant/breakfast place and was known as a big scary guy. Her guy friend’s parent weren’t the best from what I remember but I am pretty sure he had an older brother that was pretty important to the story. I am pretty sure they see the ghost by the pool or some body of water. I feel like I might be merging 2 books I read at the time together but I don’t know, it was a chapter book but not too hard because I’m pretty sure I was like 8-10 when I read it. If anyone has a book that fits some of these things please tell me, thank you!

Hi! I am looking for the name of a set of books my sister had as a child. I would have been under 6, so pre 1989. It was a little set of hard cover books which we light yellow/cream in colour that featured a story (which I cannot remember!) but featured gorgeous illustrations which included bees, beehives and I believe foxgloves. The books were around 6 or 7 inches in height x 4 or 5 inches in width. I think there were between 6-8 books in the set? I have been racking my mind, and my mothers but we cannot recall the name of the book or the author. I have trawled the internet but no luck. I was hoping someone here may have some suggestions? I would be very grateful as it is a nostalgic itch I need to scratch!
Thank you, Courtney

Hello, I was just reminded of a book I read when I was maybe 4 years old, so mid 2000s. It was about animals and the main family were *possibly mice* and they made custard pies for these crocodiles. But I think the little brother ended up inside the pie and so they made them mustard pies so that the crocodiles cried and their tears flooded the room so that the mice could escape. Pretty weird but I wonder if anyone else remembers it

Not mice but elephants. The book is Elephant Pie by Hilda Offen.

“When toothy Mrs. Snipper-Snapper asks for cherry pie—with “lots of custard”—for her birthday, her crocodile husband orders it from Mrs. Elephant. The good pachyderm never notices that little Jojo has crawled under the crust of the completed pie—but she’s so flustered to find Jojo missing that she uses mustard for the custard. It all works out: when Jojo’s brother Edward delivers the pie (much diminished by other animals’ nibbling along the way), Mrs. Snipper-Snapper’s crocodile tears of disappointment are quickly allayed by the sight of the tender little elephant; fortunately, a quick application of mustard sauce spoils the crocodiles’ appetites, and Edward and Jojo make their escape.”

I am looking for a book that I used to read in the late 90s early 2000s. The book is about a girl who teaches her dog to act like a human. Possibly Rufferella by Vanessa Gill-Brown and Mandy Stanley?

“In this book, there was a dog and a little girl. She loved being the fairy godmother, and she needed something to turn into. And then she had an idea. She would turn her dog into a human. And she taught her dog how to eat and brush her hair and change her clothes and put makeup on. And then she decided she should show off at a birthday party. Her owner told her not to tell people that she is a dog. She played games, and she drank soda, and she ate cake, and she even sang happy birthday. And then everybody decided she should go on television. One day an invitation from the queen came. She invited her to her palace. And her owner signed back saying yes. And then they went to the hair stylist. Then they went to the palace, and then they were called to the dining room. Then when the queen got served Rufferella ate the sausages. And then, she wasn’t famous any more. So she had to go back home, and then she had a present and it was a bowl. Then they went to the park and played fetch.”

A long shot, but maybe The Pink Elephant with Golden Spots by Philippe and Rejane Fix?

“The owner of a locked cabinet in a castle gives the cabinet to Alexander, Emma and Barnaby, who quickly discover it’s a magic cabinet–it can make any wish come true. Alexander would like a huge ice-cream cake. Barnaby would like a super car. Emma quickly wishes for a pink elephant with golden spots, and with a crack and a crash, there it is! The children soon learn that it takes more than wishing to take care of the elephant. Then they need to find it a home.”

The children paint the pink elephant grey so that it will fit in with the elephants in the zoo – but when they squirt water on it, the paint comes off. Crowds flock to the zoo to see the strange new elephant, making the other elephants feel jealous and neglected – so they paint themselves bright colors.

Hello! I’m trying to remember and find a title to a children’s book that was visually one of my favorites growing up. I cannot remember the main animal, though I believe it was a monkey of some sort? Who lived in the jungle and was collecting food before a storm. They ignored animals in need to selfishly collect the food. I remember there was a snake tied in a tree. And there was a warthog? stuck in mud. I believe there was another animal, but I can’t remember. The monkey ended up collecting too much food and the floor busted open and spilled all the food on the ground below. Even though the monkey didn’t help the other animals, they came and helped rebuild the floor of the house and replenished it with all the food collected. And then the monkey invited them inside away from the storm as their sincere apologies.

Please. I will be eternally grateful for someone’s help finding the title!!

I am trying to find the name of a childhood book I absolutely loved. It was about angels and the story showed what angels did for every day of the week. It had the most wonderful illustrations. The angels looked more like children or babies? This book was lost decades ago and in all these many years of searching for it every time I’m in an antique store , garage sale, estate sale, or vintage book store I have never run across it. Would have been a 50’s book. Anyone ever remember seeing or owning this book? I do not remember the title. It was either a Little Golden Book, Wonder Book or similar size and style book. I do know the cover to that book did not survive its life with me so I’m thinking it was not a Golden Book because those book covers and bindings tended to hold up better than the other book publishers in that time frame. Fingers crossed someone here knows this book and where to get a copy! This has become a bucket list item!

Hello old book lovers! For years I have been trying to find this book I read as a kid in the mid 90s. I have no idea if that’s when it was written but it is probably older—I read books from all eras as a kid (which makes this much harder). It was about two siblings, a girl and a boy, who see animal ghosts. There is an umbrella stand made from an elephant foot, which is obviously quite upsetting for the children, but the part I remember best is that there are kittens that are very cute, which makes the sister cry. She tells her brother she is crying because this means they died when they were babies. Her parents later ask why she looks like she’s been crying and she attributes it to allergies (which resonated with me a lot as a kid!!). Any help finding this book would be greatly appreciated!!

I am looking for a book from the late 80s/90s. It was an illustrated picture book, about a man who came to a dinner party (I think?) wearing a shirt that had tiny pictures of chickens all over the shirt. One of the chickens on the shirt came to life and jumped out of the shirt and caused all sorts of mayhem (I seem to remember something about laying an egg in someone’s soup)? I think the child in the book couldn’t tell anyone, or no one would listen to them, or something. At the end of the night the chicken jumps back onto the shirt, and I believe the owner of the chicken shirt gives a little wink to the child.

Please help! Thank you! 🙂

Hello from the Admin, If you’re a regular you’ll see that I moved the long text to another page and inserted an ABE affiliate link. Sorry for the ad, but this Disqus forum has so many visitors that it’s bumped us up to $$$ a month with our host! And as an antiquarian bookseller, with a long SEO history, I really don’t need a lot of traffic.

So I hope you’ll consider using ABE. ABE was founded by great booksellers, which is why the search is so good, although it’s been bought out by Amazon. Unlike Amazon, it’s easy to communicate with the seller. Just look for reading copies or nicer carefully described copies from mid level booksellers, a bit more for collectible books….. ignore the jokers at the top end! Happy reading!!

I remember having the book as a young child in the late 1980s/early 1990s, and it was already a little worn by then, so publication date could be from the 1970s. It had a blue cover with a yellow full moon and a silhouette of a castle, or creepy old house, possibly with the title also in yellow.

Unfortunately I can only remember one poem that told of a witch who went to help a local village during a plague and never returned, leaving her cat waiting in their home. The line ‘cat’s eyes, cat’s eyes, green as glass, tens of scores of years have passed’ is the only concrete sentence I can recall.

If anyone has any ideas or advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

The poem is called Catseye by Sally Farrell Odgers (1985).

You can read it here: http://sallyodgers.50megs.com/poem02.htm

She says that she wrote it for a collection published by Omnibus Books.

It is included in their book Petrifying Poems, compiled by Jane Covernton and Craig Smith (pg. 47) – but the cover of that one does not match your description, so perhaps the book was also printed with a different cover – or the poem might have also been printed in another anthology? Or maybe you are combining your memory of this poem with the cover of a different book?

Thank you so much!! The cover is a bit different so I may have misremembered it, but I do recognise some of the other poems. Loved that book as a child, thank you.

Dont think there is any hope of me finding this book as i cant remember the title. prob mid 1980s, middle grade short stories paperback which mostly featured animals but i remember one was about raindrops falling to earth. one of the short story titles was “where theres a will, theres a way”. there were some illustrations in the book, the only one i can remember are the raindrops….i feel like there was a owl or other woodland creature on the cover.

There was a children’s book about household items that turned into birds at night. Shoes, spoons, umbrellas. It was illustrated. It was written in the 70’s, when I was a child. I have no idea what the title might be. Any help would be appreciated.

If it was a chapter book with illustrations, it might be The Would-Be Witch by Ruth Chew.

“A little bit of magic can mean big adventure! Andy and Robin are stuck doing chores with an old bottle of silver polish. But when they use it, incredible things happen. The salt and pepper shakers don’t get shiny—they turn into birds! The dustpan doesn’t clean—it starts flying! And when Andy and Robin tuck the birds’ feathers behind their ears, they shrink until they’re small enough to fly the dustpan out into the night. Where will their magical ride take them?”

Thank you for answering. I don’t think that was it. I have such a vague memory of it, I don’t have a lot of details. It didn’t have any children in it. It was just the author observing the house at night. It was a short illustrated book, no chapters. Probably written for 6 or 7 year olds. Unfortunately, I don’t have much more to go on. I will probably never know. One of life’s little mysteries, lol.

Ok… another possibility: The Ice Cream Cone Coot and Other Rare Birds by Arnold Lobel? It’s got pictures of ordinary objects transformed into birds. comment image

I’m looking for a beautifully illustrated dream-like children’s book about an African American or Caribbean child who goes into the ocean and finds the spirit of a drowned African American or Caribbean woman.

Susan, Sonya whose nose turned up was from Russia, brown-eyed Teresa from Italy, Lang Po from China with delicate eyebrows, Katrinka from Holland with butter yellow hair, and Marie. Each doll shared a feature of Mary’s. So glad it’s the book you remember.

I hope someone can help me. My class was read a novel by our teacher, Grant Spangenberg, circa 1985. It was set in Australia or New Zealand, in the bush. There was an accident involving a car and a truck and I *think* all the adults were killed. The young hero has to find her/his way out. Memories of the story include a young lad with special needs, playing in some spilled chemical, likening it to ‘flowers’ and a young person lighting a fire using their hanky as kindling. I would LOVE to find this for my adventure loving daughter. Thank you in advance.

You’re welcome! So glad I could help. I read the story in The Golden Book of Nursery Tales, and immediately thought of it when you mentioned a shoe buckle in a squash.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know it was the right one!
